About time this was looked into.

Quote:
Ombudsman has started probing alleged politicisation of Victoria’s public service

The Victorian Ombudsman is investigating if the state’s public service has been undermined by the hiring of dozens of Labor apparatchiks for non-political positions.

Parliament’s upper house voted in February to call on Ombudsman Deborah Glass to look into facts outlined in an Age investigation that found more than 30 senior public servants were formerly advisers to Premier Daniel Andrews or his ministers.

Good luck with that, Deb.

The public service has always been "politicised" - it used to be chaps we knew from our club, now it's chaps we know from the Premier's Department. This will be a hopeless failure, starting with the definition of "politicisation". Those of us who do this stuff for a living are framing odds on whether there'll ever be a completed report.

Public Service = jobs for the boys regardless of government.

What should be looked at is the number of bureaucrats and how much they earn. Andrews has more people in his dept of Premier and Cabinet than any other Premier or the PM.

This is probably a more insidious problem: https://www.theage.com.au/politics/federal/six-captain-s-picks-put-on-government-tribunal-on-election-eve-20220405-p5aaxb.html

When the Government changes, the bureaucrats the new Government doesn't want all make way, typically. Appointing people to "independent" tribunals is more problematic because they are on fixed-term contracts. You can't just take them out and shoot them.

I should make it clear that both sides of politics do this - I'm not suggesting that the LNP are especially problematic - but I do think these appointments can cast a longer shadow and create more significant impediments for good governance going forward than appointing favoured public servants.

I assume they're on true fixed term contracts not maximum term contracts which are essentially the same but with different notice provisions

No love lost between Glass and the government. I'll guarantee you the report will be written and it will be scathing - as it should be.
