No, I think that's a very astute comment, Kristin, and funny too. Depends whether you're referring to the previous posts or the pills. Lol.

I would like to read the report before I make any judgements as I don't like to make statements without knowing all the facts unlike some people!

Warne will not appeal 12-month drugs ban
Reuters - 26 February 2003

MELBOURNE, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Shane Warne announced on Wednesday he would not appeal against the 12-month suspension he received last week after testing positive to a banned diuretic.

The 33-year-old spin bowler, one of Wisden's five cricketers of the 20th Century, was sent home from the World Cup two weeks ago after being told about his positive drugs test.

He claimed he took a fluid-reducing tablet to improve his appearance without knowing it contained a banned substance.

"Although I find this penalty very harsh and I am extremely disappointed that this has happened I have decided that I no longer want to put my family under even more stress. Enough is enough," Warne said in a statement.

"I have decided to accept the decision of the committee on the chin and try to move on and deal with it the best way I can."

He said that he would now be looking at other work opportunities over the next 12 months, but was not retiring from cricket.

"I am definitely going to give it my best shot to get back to the top and will continue to train hard, work on my bowling and experiment with new deliveries," Warne said.

Warne's evidence 'vague, unsatisfactory'
February 26 2003
By Dan Silkstone with AAP

Some of Shane Warne's evidence to the Australian Cricket Board's anti-doping hearing was considered to be "vague, unsatisfactory and inconsistent".

The three-person committee published their full findings today, four days after banning Warne for 12 months for testing positive to diuretics.

The findings question the integrity of Warne's evidence casting doubt over his assertions regarding the number of times he had took the drug, which he says was given to him by his mother.

"Given the extreme vagueness of Warne's evidence and some inconsistencies ... the committee has grave doubt that it has the full information as to the extent that Warne used Moduretic prior to providing the sample on 22 February," the report said.

"Much of Warne's evidence on these issues was unsatisfactory and the committee does not accept he was entirely truthful in his responses to questions about his knowledge of the ACB anti-doping policy," said the report published on the internet today.

The panel said it was unlikely Warne had taken any anabolic steroids to speed his recovery because medical evidence suggested such drugs would not have helped his recovery.

However, the three member panel made clear that Warne had neglected to check the medication he was taking and had been deliberately evasive about the regularity with which he took it.

It was, the report said, "a reckless act totally disregarding the possible consequences."

I heard Warney say, I think it was during the Ray Martin interview and replying to the bit about taking the pill to look better for a press conference, "Yes, I do take pride in my appearence. I like nice clothes, I live in a nice house ..."

Warney, if that's the case, why the hell do you wear that silly wig !!??

I have just finished reading the decision about Warney that was published today and I have to say it's a very interesting read and I recommend people do read it! I really understand what took place now and although I am upset about the decision I must say I have to agree with it now after reading about it. Basically what is stated is that Warne is being suspended for taking the banned drug because he should have known better, not because they believe he was trying to cover up any other performance enhancing drugs hence them only suspending him for twelve months when the minimum is two years! I think one year is still a bit harsh but rules are rules and Warney should have known better. I don't think he is trying to shift the blame onto his mother he just made an extremely silly mistake that he will pay for in many ways. I think we should all give Warney a break the poor guy has gone through enough and I will miss him! I hope he takes the break as a chance to get extremely fit so that he can make a great comeback! Go Warney!

Warne getting away with murder
Comment by Patrick Smith
March 1, 2003

LET's hope Steve Waugh reads this before 4.35pm. Otherwise it will be lost on him. He'll be exhausted like the rest of Australia's elite cricketers and nodding off in the corner.

Australian Cricket Board chief executive James Sutherland needs to read it too. So does the Victorian Crazy Association, once known as the Victorian Cricket Association.

Gentlemen, Shane Warne is guilty of a serious breach of the drug code. That's guilty. That's why a drug tribunal suspended him for 12 months. Do you understand that? Guilty. Please read the tribunal's findings again because they were damning of the leg-spinner. The findings are the very reason he isn't appealing. He's bloody guilty.

We need to stress this because it appears the Test captain, the ACB senior official and the Crazy association appear to think he has done no wrong at all.

Waugh says quite a few players have taken medicine without checking its appropriateness. He is also not surprised that players are not the full bottle on the drug code because the information sessions invariably come after 4.30pm and the players are knackered. If this is true then be wary of calling Waugh or any other Australian cricketer professional again.

Sutherland told the world Warne was not a drug cheat even before the findings were released. It is not Sutherland's job to prepare a soft landing for the leg-spinner. He is not Warne's public relations rep. That appears to be David Hookes' job.

Operations manager of the Victorian Crazy Association, Shaun Graf, says Warne will train and help coach the Victorian side because "he's not a murderer" and because "he is allowed in the community". He can do this because the ACB will still have Warne under contract but not pay him. Under the contract he must keep himself fit and there is no better way to do that, apparently, than train with the Victorian side.

It is one thing for Warne to be in denial about the seriousness of his drug code breach - remember he calls them fluid tablets and not prescription diuretics - but for the rest of the Australian cricket community to limply fall in line with him is scandalous.

When news first broke about Warne's positive drug test he was called stupid and naive. We can now label the VCA and the ACB exactly that. When the real Warne story was detailed in the tribunal's findings, Warne was rightly described as reckless and arrogant. Those terms will also apply to the cricket authorities if they continue to indulge Warne.

Australian sporting figures and officials have no real understanding of the drugs in sport issue. Look how the Ben Tune and Phillip Adams cases were handled. The decision to allow Warne to play a pivotal role within the state side is parochial and misguided and shuns the game's role in world sport.

Hookes, the Victorian coach, says this: "It's ridiculous that he can't prepare himself before that date of his return. What is he supposed to do? Go down to the nets at the park and bowl to (Brad) Hodge and (Jason) Arnberger? What's the difference?"

The difference is fundamental. When Warne trains with the state side the Victorian Crazy Association is giving him succour. He is training with the association's blessing, under its auspices. When he trains independently then there is not that critical link.

The VCA has responsibility to the game and not just to winning matches. It is an odd message it is sending to the rest of the sporting community when it allows a player suspended for abusing the drug code to officially train and coach the state side.

Australian cricketers would be apoplectic if say Nasser Hussain committed the same offence as Warne and was allowed to play any role - small or substantial - with the England cricket side. But then Australians specialise in double standards on the issue of drugs.

We scan the world for the slightest suggestion of drug enhanced performances and call for the death penalty at the first hint of a syringe yet dare not apply the same rigorous examination of our own athletes. The ACB and VCA decisions on Warne are stunning examples of this.

Here is the question the VCA must answer. What particular offence is considered so severe that suspended cricketers would not be allowed to train with the state team? Graf suggests murder. We would dearly like the VCA executive to articulate its position on this. Had Warne been found guilty of steroid use would he be welcomed to training and the coaching panel? Or is good old Warnie just allowed to do what he likes. Sutherland must also tell us what infraction is severe enough to sever a player's contract. A 12-month suspension isn't, even though it is a direct violation of the standard contract.

Too many Australian sports - cricket, shooting and rugby union in the past 12 months alone - have shown they are not sophisticated enough to deal with drug violation. We need to support the call by the Federal Minister for Sport, Rod Kemp, for the Australian anti-doping system to include an independent tribunal to conduct hearings into drug violations. It will bring impartiality and uniformity.

Too many sports have lost the right through their naivety and self-serving decisions to mind their own businesses. Look at cricket. It is letting Warne get away with murder.

What a raving loony! Have they revived The Truth?

So this is Patrick Smith. I can now see why this bloke is held in such low regard by respected sports figures around the country.

I could pull plenty from that load of rubbish but this should suffice. "We scan the world for the slightest suggestion of drug enhanced performances and call for the death penalty at the first hint of a syringe"

Gross exaggeration and generalisation.
