I always open with great, if no letters from that then I do blown.

I like ATONE as it uses five of the six most common letters. If that fails – or not, and you just want to start properly guessing from the third go – a good follow-up is SHIRK, which means you’ve used the nine most common letters (the most common twelve in order are ETAOINSHRDLU, so it’s possible that there are more effective combinations, like SAINT and HORDE).
