A truly remarkable performance by Smith.

Started the day 3 behind the leaders. With only 2 birdies on the front nine, it looked like he may not make a charge.

But charge, he did - in spades. Birdied the next 5 holes, coming home in 30 strokes, to pass McIlroy in the lead.

Won, with 20 under. So glad I watched it till the end. I witnessed one of the great sporting performances.

McIlroy and Young were gallant in defeat.

The other 4 Aussies all finished on 10 under.

I saw the last hole... dog was sooking at the back door so I let her in and thought it would have been close to the end when I flicked the box on.

Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland labelled Smith’s final round charge one of the best ever.

“I think it is probably one of the all-time final rounds of a major anywhere in the world,” he told SEN.

“To come from four shots behind like Cam did and overtake Rory McIlroy, who the crowd was very much behind and just stay steely calm and cool all the way through was absolutely phenomenal.

“He obviously didn’t have a great day in the third round but he just came out again and his putter was working."

"For the family of five-time Open winner Peter Thomson — one of four Aussies to win the tournament before Smith — the day took an emotional twist.

Thomson passed away in 2018, but his son Andrew, had his ashes scattered on the 18th green of the Old Course — where Smith would salute just hours later.

“At 6.45 this morning I scattered my father‘s ashes on the 18th green of the Old Course,” Andrew Thomson wrote on Twitter.

“12 hours later an Australian wins The Open. Cam Smith, Champion Golfer of the Year. Champagne golf.”

ESPN claims that Smith is the only golfer to have birdied the opening five holes on the back nine during the final round of a major in the previous 20 years.

Smith is the first Australian to win a men’s major since Jason Day in 2015 (PGA Championship). Since Greg Norman in 1993, no Australian has won the Claret Jug. "
