For everyone bagging McStay. Consider this…
He may well be the best free agent we’ve ever attracted. If you disagree, name me a better one.
If this is true, what does it say about us as a destination club?

In both finals we struggled to contain the 2nd key forward with only Moore as our key back. Maynard, Howe and Murphy whilst good intercept markers they cannot play key defensive posts. McStay could be roughies replacement but could also spend time forward or pinch hit it the ruck.

Stop telling yourselves he is of no benefit, he is coming whether you agree or not, now let’s see where he is best played.

Think that is why we are Chasing Frampton

I don't think Collingwood is a better environment than Brisbane, not for a key forward anyway. Seriously, he had the ball coming down at lightning speed into an open 50. He's not getting that here.

Part of the 'environment' is the drawcard of playing for the biggest club of all, in blockbuster games, in front of the biggest crowds where you can really make a name for yourself. Heck, it's why Buckley chose to leave Brisbane for us. Don't underestimate the value of that, and how the enthusiasm and support of fans can bring the best out of players. That's where we have it over many other clubs, particularly over those in non-AFL territory.

^]

Outside of Bux, name a single successful champion from another club that has chosen the Pies for the reasons you opine above and continued being a champion for us? I'll give you 1980-2022 (42 years) sample size to work with.

^ Champions are rare. Obtaining a champion from another club is even rarer. No-one is suggesting that McStay or others who want to come to Collingwood will be champions.

Phil Carman was a star in the SANFL before arriving at Collingwood. So were Greg Phillips and Mark Williams.

Arguably Darren Jolly, Graham Teasdale, Gary Shaw.

Jack Crisp. Jeremy Howe. Jimmy Clement. Paul Licuria.
So apart from Bucks, Pert, Ball, Jolly, Clement, Licuria, and a dozen others… what have the Romans ever done for us!!

And if you think Darcy can hold up physically to playing in the forward line then play him there and recruit a key defender. He's got the talent.

And if there's nobody on the market better than McStay, we should stay out of the market, not pay overs for the best of a really bad bunch.

And I still don't get why everyone is so gung ho to get rid of Grundy. Yes, he's a bit overpaid, but he's at least a net positive who improves us (I think Cameron got exposed a bit as a full time ruck as the season went on) which I don't think McStay does.

I am actually with you on most of the points above (not sure on the Darcy forward - that has been buried now), it is just now that they look to have been made (and I have no control over it) I am trying to understand why. As there is nothing in the media, other than throwing their hands up in the air as to why (including Nathan Buckley). You may not agree but, do your job, give us an insight into what the thinking might be. What is the logic is behind the Grundy decision?

I am a big fan of Grundy (on occasion would love to see him played as a ruck rover in the centre square for the shock value). Would love him to stay but again... what might be the logic behind Collingwood making this decision.

If Darcy were to go forward... it must be for the whole year. And he would need to build on that frame. Our game style is built on our attack from defence... and Darcy is key... so yeah nah.

All trades. So we had to give up more than cap space. (Ball was effectively a trade for Pick 30).

We seem to have a real issue getting legitimate stars through free agency. And it’s not like they don’t move - Danger, Cameron, Buddy, Lynch…
