Head gets his second - might keep his place, despite his failure with the bat. 8/316.

Labu, Lyon star in Aussies win.

Nathan Lyon took 6/128 to guide Australia to a 164 run victory, against a gallant West Indies team. in Perth. Travis Head chipped in, with 2/25.

Kraigg Brathwaite completed an excellent double, with 64 & 110.

Marnus Labuschagne's 204 and 104 n.o. duly earned him Player of the Match.

The second Test starts on Thursday, from the Adelaide Oval.

Roach and Cummins injured.

This is what happens when you dish up atrociously flat pitches... All the bowlers break down. Sad

It's Test cricket. Bowlers break down. Australia was able to take 20 wickets, comfortably, despite being a bowler short. Good batsmen were able to make runs. Good bowlers were able to take wickets. The wicket provided a good contest.

Generalisation which is not necessarily the case. Otherwise every single bowler who ever toured the sub continent full of flat pitches would have broken down. Sometimes this is a factor but it’s not a given.

"Steve Smith's acrobatic snare at slip to dismiss former West Indies skipper Jason Holder in Perth prompted teammates to suggest he'd added some 'mayo' by kicking up his heels, as if launching into a cartwheel, before completing the catch off Travis Head's bowling.

But it was an earlier and more straightforward effort – if there can be such a thing for close catchers against spin bowlers, when reacting in a split-second – off Nathan Lyon that bore far greater significance for Smith, and for Australian cricket.

In clinging on to the low offering from West Indian left-hander Kyle Mayers early on the final day of the opening NRMA Insurance Test at Perth Stadium last Sunday, Smith claimed his 51st catch from the bowling of Lyon.

That equals the record for the most potent (non-wicketkeeper) fielder-bowler combination in Australia's men's Test history.

Prior to last weekend, the benchmark belonged exclusively to Mark Taylor and the late Shane Warne with 51 catches, and with most of those also being the result of Taylor's expertise at first slip.

When Smith became aware he and Lyon now share that honour, with every chance of holding it in their own right during the second Test that starts at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, he flicked his spin-bowling teammate a text message to acknowledge the achievement."

"Steve Smith will captain Australia in the Adelaide Test with Scott Boland returning to the side in place of Pat Cummins, who has been ruled out with injury

Steve Smith will captain Australia in Adelaide for a second straight year after Pat Cummins was ruled out of the day-night Test against West Indies due to a quad strain.

Scott Boland will play his first Test since last summer's Ashes as the replacement for Cummins, who has failed to recover in time from the injury he sustained during Australia's 164-run win in Perth."

Good call on Cummins.

Absolutely NO need to risk playing him, possibly exacerbating his (presently minor) quad strain.

It's not as if the cupboard is short of prospective quicks - Boland comes straight in, Neser & Morris already added to the Test squad, and the likes of Steketee, Abbott, J Richardson, Meredith, Ellis etc. are ready to step up.

Stop press.

"Michael Neser will join Scott Boland in being recalled for the second Test in Adelaide after Josh Hazlewood was a late scratching for the day-night clash with West Indies.

With captain Pat Cummins already ruled out with a quad complaint, Hazlewood will also sit out the contest due to "general soreness".

Neser was marking out his run-up out before play on Thursday afternoon, with a team spokesperson confirming Hazlewood would miss following a heavy workload during the Perth Test."

"The Windies have had a litany of fitness concerns of their own to deal with and have been forced into making four changes from the side was initially picked for the Perth Test, which lost by 164 runs.

Fast bowlers Jayden Seales, Kemar Roach, batter Nkrumah Bonner as well as allrounder Kyle Mayers have all been ruled out with injury.

In come fast bowlers Anderson Phillip and Marquino Mindley, plus top-order pair Sharmarh Brooks (who played as Bonner's concussion substitute in Perth) and Devon Thomas."

With back-up allrounder Raymond Reifer also injured, the visitors' personnel issues have become so dire that they have been forced to fly in an emergency substitute fielder from Melbourne.
