"Maxwell ... will then undergo a lengthy rehabilitation after fracturing his left fibula on Saturday.

The 34-year-old underwent surgery on Sunday after he and the person celebrating the milestone were running in a backyard on Saturday evening.

Both slipped and fell, with Maxwell's leg becoming trapped under the other person's, understood to be a friend of Maxwell's.
...

But it is rough timing for the allrounder, who could face up to three months on the sidelines. A more detailed prognosis is expected later this week."

Can the Melbourne Stars win without him? Sounds like he's going to miss the entire Aussie Summer.

'It just snapped': Maxwell details harrowing injury tale

https://www.cricket.com.au/news/feature/glenn-maxwell-broken-leg-injury-detail-india-tour-test-cricket-extend-career-unplayable-podcast/2022-11-22

'"It just snapped. I heard and felt every part of it. It was pretty painful.

"I was screaming a bit and he was like, 'please tell me you're joking, please tell me you're joking'."

Maxwell wasn't, and called for his wife, Vini as he lay prone for about 50 minutes. Eager not to make the injury worse by moving him unnecessarily, his friends erected a makeshift tent to protect him from the rain before it was decided, on doctors' advice, he would be driven to hospital.

"I probably didn't sleep for two days while I was in agony," he said. "It was it was a pretty horrible couple of days. My wife was unbelievable through it all.

"I shattered my fibula. So that one I think was the first snap I heard. It was snapped in half, but it also shattered through the bone.

"There was a bit of a chip off the tibia as well (and) I ruptured all the ligaments on top of my foot as well … the syndesmosis ligaments, they're all ruptured."
...

"As weird as it sounds … it's probably not the worst time in my career to have a bit of a break," said Maxwell.
...

"It has refocused me a little bit. I think that's the one silver lining I see.
...

"My body is tired and cooked, and the end is probably closer than it should have been at 34.

"But I think now I can reassess..."'

Green set for operation, Starc pushing time for India

https://www.cricket.com.au/news/mitchell-starc-finger-injury-in-doubt-for-start-of-india-series-australia-south-africa-mcg/2022-12-29

"Both Green and Starc suffered serious finger injuries during the ... Boxing Day Test ... and ... the pair will now be sidelined for the series finale in Sydney.

Green will go under the knife to repair a fracture to his right index finger having consulted with a specialist on Thursday, but medicos are confident the allrounder will be available again in about four weeks, around when Australia are set to fly out ...

Starc on the other hand is not expected to require an operation for the tendon damage and small fracture to his left middle finger, yet the paceman is in doubt to be available for the India series opener on February 9..."

Rishabh Pant out of ICU but extent of leg injuries unclear

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/rishabh-pant-out-of-icu-but-extent-of-leg-injuries-unclear-1351858

"Rishabh Pant is out of the ICU, but the extent of injuries on his knee, toe and ankle is not yet known as he is still not in shape to go through MRI scans.
...

Preliminary scans were done on December 30 to eliminate brain and spine injuries, but the scans on the knee and foot were held back because of the pain and swelling. Also, plastic surgery was performed to treat lacerative and abrasion wounds and facial injuries.
...

He hasn't started walking yet."

Why are you posting about Pant in your own Maxwell thread? Have they never been seen in the same room together?

Bruce Reid and Hazlewood:

'During the latter days of his maddeningly truncated Test career, Bruce Reid seemed always to be either taking bags of wickets or missing through injury.

In fact, in his last nine Tests, spread across three years, Reid scooped 51 wickets at 18.58, striking every 43 balls. Nineteen wickets came in the final two Tests he was able to complete, 11 months apart. In this period virtually every over from Reid was a privilege to watch.

Thirty-one years on, and 31-year-old Josh Hazlewood has developed a similarly frustrating niche. Since the end of the 2019 Ashes series, Hazlewood has played just 11 of Australia’s 24 Tests, in between hamstring and side issues.

When he has played, Hazlewood’s combination of height, subtle movement and snappy pace have proven almost as challenging as Reid’s once did: 34 wickets at 23.52 while conceding just 2.41 runs per over. When he hasn’t, Australia have worked their options."
...

Speaking earlier this summer, Hazlewood was certainly eager not to find himself injured at another unfortunate juncture.

“It’s frustrating, definitely. I don’t feel like I’ve been injured much ... it just happens to be at the wrong time of the year,” he said.

“The Test matches are so close together now.”
...

“If he had stayed fit,” Simpson wrote in his book The Reasons Why, “there is no doubt at all that Australia would have been recognised as world champions two or three years before we were able to claim that position, simply because he was a great bowler, one of the finest bowlers I have ever seen.”'

Green on track for Nagpur, Handscomb set for scans

https://www.cricket.com.au/news/australia-injuries-green-starc-handscomb-test-squad-border-gavaskar-india-tour/2023-01-11

'"Greeny, we're hopeful that he should be right for the first Test," Bailey said.

"But if not that, that's okay. We feel like we've got the squad that can cover that.

"Starcy's not expected to be available for the first Test, in fact he's going to come across to India a touch later."

The third concern of the squad is recalled batter Peter Handscomb, who was forced to retire hurt while batting for St Kilda in a T20 match on Tuesday evening.

Handscomb was struck on the hip but didn't leave the field until he collapsed to the ground after hitting a six in the following over.

"Pete's got a scan tomorrow morning to check on that. He's confident it's nothing too serious," Bailey told reporters.'

And ahead of the Ashes...

‘Buzzing’: Ashes heats up after England quick Jofra Archer’s ‘amazing’ comeback

'After undergoing two elbow operations and suffering a stress fracture in his back since he knocked out Aussie batter Steve Smith at Lord’s in 2019, the English quick had his captain “buzzing” with his showing in South Africa’s new T20 league.

Having spent 541 days on the sidelines, Archer returned with 3-27 from his four overs for MI Cape Town.

Stokes took to Twitter to show his enthusiasm tweeting “BUZZING BUZZING BUZZING to see @JofraArcher back on the field”.'

Ashes buzz as England tyro Archer returns after 18 months out

'... Darren Gough... said: “England have been excellent in the last 12 months, but add Jofra Archer in and it leads to exciting times. What we saw in his first over was, ‘wow, he’s back’.”

It has been a long road. Since Archer’s last match he has undergone two elbow operations and suffered a stress fracture of the back.

His rehabilitation stepped up with a practice outing for England Lions in November, but this was his first competitive outing...
...

England will manage his workload carefully with this year’s Ashes very much the target.

... Archer’s Test record isn’t, in truth, that impressive. But the effect his raw pace has belies those numbers.

With five Tests in less than seven weeks England clearly would not risk Archer playing them all, but if they can rotate him and the equally rapid Mark Wood they could have real pace options in each match.
'

"Victorian cricket officials consider the next round of the Shield, starting Thursday week, as a realistic aim for Maxwell, but his fitness will be closely monitored after his gruesome injury, following which he said he needed to relearn how to walk.

Though Maxwell has resumed batting in the nets, his ability to confidently slide and dive in the field will be a key factor in when he is cleared for a return to topline cricket.

Maxwell, who has not played a first-class game since October 2019, is only a minute chance of getting a call-up for the series in India..."
