On top of all money the state Govt is pouring into local Geelong football, they’re now announcing hundreds of millions for Geelong sport and infrastructure (including whatever their home ground is called now) for the commonwealth games — but guarantee the Cats will be indirect beneficiaries of that. This all on top of the “go home” factor we saw in full swing this trade. $$%^%%$ hell.

i feel for Gippsland and the poor old Latrobe Valley. All the cash going to Geelong, hasn’t changed since Bracks was in charge

Good on them. They retained a strong link to their roots and are now reaping the rewards.

I am envious of what they have done with their home ground. We sold out and moved to the G and left Vic Park for a soulless training ground.

I agree about Vic Park - but we were left with little alternative by a jealous and hostile Council. They made it practically impossible for us to remain. Maybe our Board at the time was at fault - I didn't follow the politics closely - but there was no public sense that the local Council valued our Club or its heritage or wanted to do anything to preserve Collingwood at Victoria Park. We didn't "sell out" - we weren't allowed to buy in and the terms to remain were most uncomfortable.

Geelong is a different place - the Council would be voted out of office in an instant if it didn't run the municipality with one eye firmly on what is best for GFC. You want to walk your dog in Kardinia Park? **** off and walk it somewhere else. This is a football ground and football is serious business.

For other examples, closer to our geographic home, have a look at the way Carlton and North Melbourne, respectively, have been propped up with facility improvements at their home grounds. No senior AFL games are now played at Princes Park or Arden St but that doesn't seem to have diminished Melbourne Council's view of the significance of those clubs to their local communities. Collingwood, by contrast, was arse-$%$ed by the locals.

^ Spot on, P4S.

Collingwood and Yarra Council always had a frosty relationship.

In an ideal world, I would have loved to have stayed at Vic Park.

Bracks poured $300m in Dandenong and that flopped. So it only makes sense for the State Govt to put money where it's making a difference.

I grew up believing Geelong was the "second city" of Victoria. I recall Kennett coming out and saying Dandenong was Victorias second city.

Perhaps Geelong can come back into the NBL?

I can’t see Dandenong becoming an AFL flag dynasty with government money 😂

Geelong to get a BBL team?

...An NRL team?

...An A-League team?

They have the mighty Geelong-Korea in the ABL.

ONFIELD they will crash, an it wont be long now, or pretty. They are the oldest team in the comp , by far. Duckwood has gone, and will be missed, he was their Pendles, even more vital as Leader. Hawkins is ageing fast, one more season, and he is irreplaceable, fact. Dangermouse is no spring chicken, as are Guthrie, Rohan, even Cameron. Henry wont make up for Hawk, when he goes end of next season. Their oldies have carried this ageing team which we should have beaten in the QF, hello to those corrupt umpires, that night. The Cats will crash, I reckon we will kick their arses next season, they cannot hold Jack, Bobby Hill, Jamie, Krueger, Checkers and Ash all firing, with Tay, Mitchell, De Goey running riot too. Vengeance on this mob will be very sweet indeed.

Post subject: Tom Hawkins to take big step as injury recovery continuesReply with quote

Assists our Round 1 prospects.

"Our medical team and Tom have gone through an extensive process which has included consultation with specialists to determine the best approach and have come to the decision for Tom to undergo surgery this week," Geelong general manager of football Simon Lloyd said in a statement at the time.

"Tom is incredibly meticulous in his training and preparation, and we know he'll have the same application to his recovery.

"We will take the time and diligence required to have him return to playing in early 2023."
