How Ponting could have released pressure valve in Australian cricket
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/how-ponting-could-have-released-pressure-valve-in-australian-cricket-20211008-p58ybg.html
Lehmann: “If you split the role there is more longevity because you don’t have to do everything. And it has to be done properly so the T20 team can specialise. That’s just sensible.”
Pat Howard on Ponting: “He was an extremely popular candidate and had been incredibly influential on the New Zealand T20 tour. He had given great energy to the players and coaches in that period.
“Darren coached on that tour but took very much a back seat. He was obviously tired. I tried to give him a tour a year off.”
Ponting: “I had a few chats with Pat Howard. It never got to the detail of specifics, timing, resources, structure etc as there was no time pressure for that to happen. It was an open-ended discussion.
...
“My life has changed a lot since then. IPL continues to be my coaching priority and it works well with my media commitments with the Seven Network, Cricket Australia and Sky in the UK.
“The rest of the year is spent with my family and enjoying a work/life balance that I have never had before. Right now, I would have to give up so much to take on a national role. It’s just the wrong time for me.”
M. Conn: 'Some of the best candidates for coaching roles at a state and national level such as Ponting, Trevor Bayliss and Simon Katich get paid far more for spending 10 weeks at the IPL rather than 10 months in the Australian system.' |

[Steve] 'Waugh said any review should examine restructuring Australia’s coaching set-up, with a specialist T20 mentor to be considered.
While Waugh remains a supporter of Langer, whose intense coaching style has been questioned by his players, England World Cup-winning boss Trevor Bayliss has been spoken of in cricket circles as a future T20 or white-ball coach.
“It’s a big ask for the coach to be away all the time managing three forms of the game, I’m sure Justin will think he can do it,” Waugh said. “He’s more than capable of it but let’s wait and see what the outcome is. Put everything on the table and reassess.
“I see it [T20] as cricket but it’s almost a different sport. While a lot of the skills are transferable, there’s new skills involved, the game evolves very quickly. You can get left behind if you stick to a certain style of play.”'

'Time commitment' stops Ricky Ponting from coaching India and Australia
Former Australia captain reveals he was approached by BCCI to coach India before Dravid was appointed
https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/time-commitment-stops-ricky-ponting-from-coaching-india-and-australia-1290037
"Let's see what they [CA] do, if they ever split the coaches among say, white-ball and red-ball teams. I think everyone loves to coach the Australian team. I actually think, from my view, it's almost an older man's job and not for someone who has got a young family or for a person like Justin [Langer] where he is on the other end now where his family is all grown up and moved away. You are not giving up that side of your life. It's over 300 days a year, a pretty hard job. Justin's been under pressure since he took over the job, more so, the last few months. That's the only thing that would stop me - the time commitment." |

Mutinous players will have a say in Langer contract negotiations
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/mutinous-players-will-have-a-say-in-langer-contract-negotiations-20211231-p59l20.html
"Oliver would not say who would make the final decision, whether it would be CEO Nick Hockley or the CA board, or why it took a revolt of players and support staff in August, more than three years into Langer’s tenure, for a major change to the coaching structure.
...
Worn out by Langer’s intensity, volatility and micromanagement, then Test captain Tim Paine, white-ball captain Aaron Finch and then vice-captain Pat Cummins demanded an emergency meeting in August with Hockley and then Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings.
The players were further angered when Cricket Australia issued a statement before the meeting backing Langer, with Eddings desperate to keep Western Australia’s vote, so he could remain chairman. The ploy failed when WA voted with NSW and Queensland to ditch Eddings.
With CA unmoved after failing to act on the players’ long-running concerns about the coach, Paine, Finch and Cummins then each confronted Langer individually.
This forced Langer to take a back seat, leaving the senior players with more autonomy and the day-to-day coaching to assistants Andrew McDonald, Michael Di Venuto and Jeff Vaughan.
Now Test captain, Cummins was non-committal about Langer’s future after the third Test in Melbourne." |

^^ Explosive stuff...
And who is Jeff Vaughan?? Never heard of him before!!
In fairness to Langer... gotta say, some of the player behaviour has been gobsmacking... Marny took to the field in Tests with a sandwich stuffed in his pocket. Langer told him to stop. Media said players were outraged. Wowee... It's not a ***** Sunday picnic. So unprofessional of the players... |

Cricket Australia must sacrifice Langer or lose winning formula
https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/cricket-australia-must-sacrifice-langer-or-lose-winning-formula-20220113-p59o20.html
"Langer has taken a back seat since a mutiny by players and support staff in August, leaving assistant coaches Andrew McDonald and Michael Di Venuto in charge, but team sources fear they will leave if the head coach stays.
...
Leading into the Boxing Day Test Langer said that he wanted to continue coaching Australia in all three forms beyond the end of his contract in June.
...
One senior Australian cricket source described McDonald as “much loved” by the players, leaving him in pole position to take over as head coach in what may become a revamped structure." |

How Alex Ferguson led Justin Langer astray
https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/how-alex-ferguson-led-justin-langer-astray-20220114-p59obx.html
"An anecdote Langer chose to tell from the much sought-after catch-up helps explain why his tenure as coach of the Australian team is coming to an unfortunate end.
“One of the things he said, he’s a bit old school, he said, ‘Never cede control to the players, because someone has to make the decision, someone has to be the boss,’ ” Langer later recalled on a podcast with ... Luke Darcy.
This highlights a fundamental misunderstanding of the cricket coach’s role. He is not the boss.
Captains are in charge of cricket teams. Coaches are mentors not dictators, or they should be.
...
One of Allan Border’s regrets as captain was ceding power to Australia’s first mentor, Bob Simpson, a fine coach but a difficult man who having gained control was not willing to hand it back.
When Mark Taylor took over from Border in 1994 he made it clear from the outset who was in charge, much to Simpson’s chagrin.
...
But Ferguson inadvertently highlighted Langer’s biggest problem. He was trying to be a football coach of the national cricket team.
Australia has never had such a footified coach before. He is a board member of the West Coast Eagles and a confidant of their coach, Adam Simpson.
His circle of significant football friends includes ... Don Pyke...
...
Footballers go home after training or games and get away from everything. Cricketers and their support staff travel together for weeks and months living in each other’s pockets.
It is an unnatural existence that requires more hugs than hammer blows, something Langer learnt too late in his four-year tenure." |

"From boyhood backyard cricket in Broken Hill to assistant coach of the Australian team, it's been a 30-year journey for Jeff Vaughan.
...
But that didn't stop him from representing South Australia for a number of years as a player, before transitioning into coaching, before later becoming Tasmania's head coach in 2020.
...
During his short stint with the Tassie Tigers which began in 2017, the incoming batting coach has received plenty of praise from players like Matthew Wade, who said Vaughan is, "As good a batting coach as I've worked with".
"He's got a great ability to be able to let players make their own decisions and if it doesn't work then he'll provide another opportunity to help you find a way," according to Wade."

Langer's been inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame -- of course for his batting, not his coaching. He thanked his teammates... He should doubly thank them! They are almost the only ones backing an extension to his coaching contract!
"Justin Langer’s coaching fate is expected to be decided before Australia’s mooted Test tour of Pakistan, with key players unmoved on their stance on the coach despite the national men’s team’s recent success.
...
The Test great has been unable to win over his players, who let him know early last year of their issues with his intensity, mood swings and management style. It took a player mutiny requiring intervention from then CA chairman Earl Eddings and chief executive Nick Hockley for Langer to change.
Oliver is seen as a confidant of Langer, but players were surprised how sympathetic the NSW-based Hockley was to their views."

Langer meltdown appears to spell the end for Australia coach
https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/langer-meltdown-appears-to-spell-the-end-for-australia-coach-20220131-p59sn6.html
"The CA board is likely to take a dim view of Langer’s behaviour when it meets to discuss his tenure on Friday.
In an increasingly desperate attempt to keep his job despite a full-scale player and support staff mutiny back in August about his intense and inconsistent micromanagement style, Langer is refusing to accept anything less than a full contract renewal.
...
While Cricket Australia has been insisting that Langer will tour Pakistan as coach, there have been confusing messages coming out of the Australian squad.
Multiple sources claim that Langer had been saying that he would not tour Pakistan but more recently changed his position to say he would go.
There has been a concerted PR campaign in recent weeks from Langer’s former teammates saying he should be reappointed following Australia claiming the Twenty20 World Cup title in November and winning the Ashes 4-0.
Equally, there is an unbending belief by many of the players and support staff that the further Langer is away from the team, the better it performs." |

Role player or coach for life? The Justin Langer disconnect
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/role-player-or-coach-for-life-the-justin-langer-disconnect-20220201-p59sv8.html
"Here is the central point. Langer, having reached what he sees as the pinnacle of coaching in cricket, has repeatedly told those close to him that he wants to remain in the job for a long, long time. Largely, this is because he cannot see any other role out there that would satisfy him. Satisfy, or compel – Langer has spent plenty of the past four years feeling miserable, pressured and at times even unwell.
He spoke at length in 2019 about his wife Sue breaking down at the breakfast table one morning as she told him she did not like what the job was doing to him. But the centre of Australian cricket is where Langer and his many friends think he should be. Moreover, it is where they think he deserves to be.
Unfortunately for Langer, and to the evident disgust of the former teammates whom he thanked for their support at the time he was inducted to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame last week, Cricket Australia had no such plan for an imperial reign by the coach.
...
Accusations of “player power” and an “eastern states cartel” are easy to hurl around in the fractured, states-rights Australia of 2022. But they mistakenly ascribe to cricket coaches the exalted roles enjoyed by their counterparts in the football codes, where the likes of Ferguson, Bennett and Alastair Clarkson move the players as though chess pieces from on high.
...
But not every former teammate of Langer’s believes he should carry on in the job. ...
“If I was him I’d walk away, actually,” Lehmann told Fox Sports a few weeks ago. “Four years, out on a high. Perfect. I coached for a year too long and in that moment I didn’t realise it. I think four years is a perfect tenure. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. He could coach one format, but all three is a lot to take on … JL knows my thoughts on that. I’ve spoken to him about it.”
...
“There’s two ways to look at it,” Langer reasoned. “It either doesn’t get any better than this and it’s time to ride off into the sunset, or it makes you more determined. It’s almost addictive. You have these feelings and when you’re amongst a team like this, it’s an addictive thing.“
Over the next few days, Langer and CA both need to weigh up how healthy that sounds." |

Justin Langer's time as head coach of Australia's men's team is over after the former opening batter ended six months of speculation and walked away from the role.

"Test legends Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden have slammed Cricket Australia (CA) for its handling of Justin Langer's departure as head coach of the national men’s team, while a tearful Hayden has said the lack of public backing from players in the lead-up to Langer's resignation would have been "extremely hurtful" for his former teammate."
