Not just because he has a County contract.
As he's the incumbent Test #5, the selectors want him to get some first class/red ball innings in the UK, before the Ashes.

The NZ Tour was designed by CA to be FC/red ball "UK" cricket. CA reckon NZ conditions with the Dukes are as close to UK conditions as they can get.
It's all part of the Ashes prep. |

| Waste of time playing fourth-rate opposition like this. 8/588 across the two Australian innings. NZ can barely find two or three Test-standard players for the Test team - what hope is there of them having competent bowlers in their "A" side? |
