PMs

Post by David »

Hi mods,

What happen to PMs after they disappear from your inbox? I know they have about a 12 month shelf-life or thereabouts, but are they kept in some perpetual archive or just permanently erased?

Original phpbb programming deleted the messages from the database

If they are retained here, it is because some sneaky admin is keeping them for his own purposes

I know for a fact that your PM's are accessible by the mods/owner of the site.

The mods have no access to them once deleted.

Whether they can be accessed by site administrators I cannot say.

Thanks for the clarification that our PM's are not "private" in any sense of the word.

What do you guys have to hide? Surely it's better that mods have access so that they can look into abuse etc that might occur via PMs.

^ FWIW it doesn't really bother me either way. I just wanted to know if I could read stuff I wrote (and was sent) years ago. I guess it seems like a no.

Really?? So why call them "private messages" - why not call them "messages that can be read by moderators and the recipient"??

I must say I'm a little disappointed in that. Can't there just be a 'forward' function, so that any distressing/abusive messages can be forwarded to mods??
That sucks. And I have nothing to hide, I would have just expected a "private" message to be, well, private.

The owners of the site need the ability to produce them (or the logs) as evidence if they're subpoenaed or a criminal investigation takes place.....

Cmon guys get with it. As administrator of any site; of course you will have access to any data created by your site, PMs included.

However, in my experience I know that it is not such a simple task to retrieve any member's PM, and certainly not to read them on a regular basis.

Just like your gmail, hotmail etc... the owner can always access the info - doesn't mean that they do.

Unless you're posting on the forum I administer.

I read people's 'P' Ms just for kicks

It is very very easy for any webmaster to do

Whether it is right or proper to do so is another matter
