Ridiculous overreaction from the humourless few that somehow feel empowered by their own empty outrage.

The comments were a joke. Quite a funny one at that.

It is an insult to the actual victims of violence that people are more outraged by this than they are by a woman being beaten with an iron bar during a robbery.

Yet the headlines tomorrow will be all about a harmless joke told on radio. The discussion at workplaces tomorrow will be about a joke told on radio. Columnists will fill pages, talk-back will be inundated with outrage, outrage so deeply and sincerely held that will be gone by the afternoon. All of it impotent, pointless and counter productive.

And why? Because the joke was told by celebrities.

Be angry if it makes you feel better, but don't kid yourself that your attitude does anything to end violence against women. You're just creating victims where there are none, and leaving the real victims to their own devices.

I think Billy is alluding to the culture in which domestic and general violence against women in this country is tolerated....its the old 'was only joking about' argument.

His comments were out of line, and in my opinion, worse than the King Kong 'joke'.

Whether you support Eddie or not what the incident has shown is:

1. Eddie is a goose when it comes to this & other incidents.
2. Eddie should've apologised unequivocally - without excuses or blame.
3. Eddie should've called Caro to apologise straight away
4. Eddie doesn't get it
5. Eddie can be cringeworthy

I'm shocked that Eddie couldn't do some basic damage control for a man that is meant have media smarts.

Having said that, do I think Eddie is misogynist? No
Do I think Eddie has been good for Collingwood? Yes most of the time.

If you label this as PC then you've missed the point. I rarely agree with whatsinaname but she's mostly nailed on these pages in my opinion.

Eddie did apologise this morning on radio, he was left messages for Wilson but as of this morning she hadn't returned them and called him back.

I didn't particularly find the thing funny, buet I can get where Eddie was coming from, and Brayshaw as both have been on the receiving end of fictitious critical damaging articles from Wilson over the years and it's reasonably clear that neither have a lot of respect for her journalistic integrity. Basically she makes shit up and when pinned blames her "sources".

Eddie is neither sexist or misogynist, nor was he advocating violence against women, he made remarks about a person based on their professional behaviour, not their gender, but unfortunately because the person the comments were about is female a whole lot of unintended nuances get attributed to the comments.

Frawley is the knucklehead, he often makes remarks about taking physical retribution on Damien Barrett and other members of the footy panel on MMM and no-one bats an eyelid (even though I don't find it overly humorous) yet clearly he wouldn't dare make the same remarks to a female as he'd get crucified for threatening violence against a woman.

Personally I don't think this whole thing does wonders for the Women's causes, in fact I believe the over the top reaction from some actually has a detrimental effect as it unfortunately seems to emphasise that women (apparently) need to be treated with kid gloves and aren't able to stand up for themselves, which is really unfortunate.

If the remark was inappropriate to make about Wilson but it would have been acceptable to make it about a male, then we've got something wrong.

If Wilson had made similar comments on 3AW when Eddie slid into the Ice regarding Eddie not surfacing, would anyone have cared?

I'm a qualified mechanic, so I know a bit about boys clubs, and I still have the respect of everyone in that garage, 30 years later. You have a crack at me, don't apologise, cos you will get it back with interest. Sticks and stones.....

NO way, both tony abbott and joe hockey laughed it off, saying, well that's jonsey for you. But there was nothing like this hoo haaa over what eddie said, nothing, Julia just laughed it off.

Eddie's comments were silly, not quite sure about the violence against women, maybe it can be mistaken as advocating that who knows...but certainly should have put more thought into what he was saying.

It's not the first time, and probably not the last time as a media personality, or human that he puts his foot in it a bit. Just needs to carefully think about what he says a bit more.

Eddie's comments were neither silly nor anything to do about violence against women. It was friendly banter between himself and his team and self mocking and making fun of his humiliating experience of ducking under the ice, all for the good cause of raising money for research into MND.
This type of humour is as old as time itself. In the 1950's the most popular show on American television was The Honeymooners staring Jackie Gleeson. At the end of each episode after the Jackie Gleeson character would make a complete fool of himself, his wife Alice would extricate her husband out of the situation. At which point the husband would exclaim POW! Alice, you're going to get it one of these days and pound his fist into the palm of his other hand. The cartoon series The Flintstones was based on The Honeymooners and featured the same tensions between the married couple where Fred was always getting himself into trouble and Wilmer was the one to get Fred out of trouble, at which point Fred would say, Wilmer, you're going to get it one of these days. At no point did the tens of millions of people watching these shows ever think that Ralf (The Honeymooners) or Fred (The Flintstones) would ever lay a hand on their wives. All the mischief directed at the wives was figurative, not physical in any sense at all and for any viewer to think otherwise was more an indictment on the mental state of the viewer than the scriptwriters who wrote the shows. In fact these types of shows were regarded as wholesome entertainment.
This is an example of political correctness gone crazy, where narrow minded people with political agendas and an axe to grind against a popular media personality in Eddie Maguire, are pursuing their own agendas at the cost of free speech and a free society.
