How often do father son picks end up duds ?

Post by princem007 »

I can only think of brayden shaw and maybe Cloke brothers except maybe Trav if you forget last 3 years. Jason was ok first 2 years.

Anyone else to add to that list ??

My point being we should take a chance on FS picks even if they may not be obvious picks ahead of others. My case in point is Pickens son and Stewart's son.

I hope we take daicos and brown but club playing cards close to chest according to article on josh daicos he is no certainty.??

Surely we won't make picken and Stewart mistakes again ??

Stewart has not set the NEAFL world on fire
Carlscum 120 years being cheating scum

Picked was a good ordinary tagger until the past 2-3 seasons. No one saw the past year or two coming...and it was a decade long wait.

Look around other clubs as well, there's been a few. It's not a guarantee to be successful.

The Dogs took two Cordy's with FS picks, one played in the GF and the other was delisted after a career that made Gault look like a superstar by comparison.

here's a list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_p ... 93son_rule

Games played as at 2012.

Based on that list, probably more misses than hits.
Interestingly Brayden Shaw was the highly rated one and heater the spec selection. Jason and Cameron were the loss leaders to get Travis to the club and that was ok until the last few years.

No real Ablett or Scarlett's there.

Clubs will choose based on their perception of market value. Silvagni slipped to a late pick to the Blues last year. Bulldogs bid early on Moore and he looks like he could genuinely be an A grader in time.

Both Daicos and Brown have appealing attributes but doubtful that they are viewed as highly as others.

Hoping they do a Silvagni for us and slide to the 50's.

Picken a slower payback than Josh Dunkley, who was passed over by Sydney and then played against them to win a premiership this season.

While Picken may not have been a star his whole career, he's been a pretty regular and remarkably durable senior footballer for the past 8 seasons, averaging 22 games a season and never under 20 in that time. Would have been well worthy of a father son pick accordingly, albeit his value was slow to be spotted by all clubs.

Accordingly, I think I'd be a little slower to defend his non-selection than to suggest that he's only been good for the past couple.

Picken took 4-5 years to even get onto an AFL list. Even then it was because his VFL club was paying part of his salary. It's not a miss to be critical over.
Well done boys!

He did a preseason with us in 2005 or 2006, then promptly looked too small, too slow and too talentless for the VFL. I think he came good for Williamstown in about his 3rd season there. He went to Footscray as a rookie at a time when he would scarcely have warranted a place on our list. He's been OK for them but only been a genuine player since 2015. So, he's had 2 outstanding seasons at age 28-30. It's probably downhill from here.
