West Coast star Willie Rioli is out of the finals series and has been provisionally suspended after returning an adverse finding on an ASADA drug test.
An A sample recorded by Rioli returned an adverse finding, out of competition on August 20, for urine substitution.
The maximum penalty for this is a four year ban.
“The AFL today confirmed that a mandatory provisional suspension had been handed to West Coast Eagles Player William Rioli following notification to him by ASADA of an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) and a potential violation of the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code (Code),” AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon said.
“It is asserted that Rioli’s A sample returned an Adverse Analytical Finding for Urine Substitution being a Prohibited Method following an Out-of-Competition doping control test on 20 August 2019.
“ASADA informed the AFL yesterday of the results of the testing of the sample and Rioli was formally notified late last night after arriving in Melbourne.
“Under the Code, ASADA conducts testing for the AFL as part of a comprehensive anti-doping program designed to protect the integrity of the AFL competition.
“The provisional suspension is effective immediately. Rioli will not be eligible to compete in AFL competitions or any WADA-compliant sport (including the WAFL) while provisionally suspended, but will be able to train, prior to the hearing and determination of the asserted Code violation.
“Rioli has been withdrawn from the West Coast Eagles team that will play against Geelong on Friday night.
“It is important that Rioli be provided a fair process. As a result, the AFL will not be providing further detail on this case at this time.

He's provided a urine sample that isn't urine.

Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down.

Gone, four years. Just like trying to avoid a breath test, you generally cop the maximum.

I agree.makri wrote:Gone, four years. Just like trying to avoid a breath test, you generally cop the maximum.
I am not sure what mitigation you could legitimately argue if you are seeking to tamper with the sample provided. At 24, a 4 year ban would almost end his career.

Let's compare with Sam Murray. Knocked out for one and a half seasons, due to taking illicit drugs during the week and then having detectable traces of it in his bloodstream after a game.
Now Rioli, obfuscating a urine sample. A deliberate action of deceipt.
Which infraction is worse?
Not hard to figure out.
, I am massively relieved that we are not involved in this incident!
If I, God forbid, were a WC supporter, I would now be extremely concerned. The impact of this event on the entire team is totally unpredictable.
Makes a Geelong victory seem more possible (which we should all be hoping for).

On FF tonight, different footballers have said it's virtually impossible to put anything but your own urine in the sampling jar, because ASADA officials are with the person being tested every second from the moment they are told they have to give a sample. If the official is doing their due diligence, the player is under intense observation throughout. The whole procedure is designed to prevent urine substitution. So it's all quite a mystery at this point in time.
