Re the coach, I don't know why posters on this forum continue to call for Clarkson! Why? Yesterdays man.
mmm.. well lets think of a couple of reasons:
- He has great rapport with his players
- All players have great respect for him. No player that has left the club have been disgruntled. Even though he had to move on some great players.
- Hawthorn lost arguably the greatest match winner to play in the last two decades (Franklin) and Hawthorn still went on to win flags.
- He has good game plans and he is not afraid to change or tinker with them. (hearing Jordon Lewis speak he said that Clarko would often come with new plans or set plays all the time, but once implemented he was also not afraid to abandon them altogether if he felt the need .
- Remember the game plan 'Clarko's cluster'? That won them the flag over Geelong? It took ages for other coaches to work it out and beat it, then when they did, he then reinvented Hawthorn again and won flags
- He always gets the maximum output out of players
- He is not afraid to try something out of the normal ie. play a ruckman in the backline. Like he did with McCEvoy. Play a so called 'fat' 'unfit' Suart Dew in a Grand Final.
Just because Hawthorn isn't getting results now shouldn't mean he is a 'Yesterday's man'. He is the longest serving coach and maybe going stale at Hawthorn. A fresh start maybe the thing that both Clarko and Hawks need therefore the Collingwood board would be negligent in there duty to not ask the question of him.
I believe the AFL system in general has it wrong with older coaches not considered for positions in favour of the younger coaches. The USFL and NBA leagues have a large proportion of coaches that are >50 years of age. Younger coaches that have done an apprenticeship have there place and good on clubs for giving them a go. But to my mind I prefer an older, wiser, successful experienced coach every day of the week.
