Neither state is trying to reduce numbers back to zero, both acknowledge that's now not going to happen, so the game now is about containment, keeping the daily cases at a manageable level.
And Vic numbers will keep getting worse as too many people have given up and happy to defy the rules.
10 of my family members caught up on Saturday as being Regional we were allowed. We went to our local gardens for lunch in a rotunda area we had our masks on and social distanced while we were there we had a few different people come up to us and said "oh you aren't the people we are looking for as you are all wearing masks" they then proceeded to meet up about 20 metres away and had a meeting there were about 20-30 of them none of them wearing masks no social distance and had their meeting with each other, obviously set up by social media as they weren't friends at all. They were not locals from my area, wish they would fu*k off!
And yes one of my family members did report them but no-one came.
That's messed up, organising to meet up with random people over social media during a pandemic. Family I get but strangers?

The bit that gets me is that they have gone out of their way to find a place that is not close to their home and most likely not policed. A local shop nearby I have found out today that they had a couple turn up to buy takeaway and they abused the staff as they were asked to show their licence they were from Melbourne and most likely were a part of this meeting.

It's not all big sites and tea rooms. There's 2 construction sites right near me, one building 2 townhouses and another 6 units. Multiple tradies on site at any time, not seen a single person wearing a mask there any time I've walked past.
I've just been invited to a meeting to discuss a positive case at work. She's been working from home so there's no possibility of transmission with us but her partner is in construction. If he's been on site while infectious, there's your spread.

Don't worry, Dan hasn't given up. NSW case numbers seem to have plateaued while Victoria's are rising. Now Dan is into it, won't take long for him to protect his lead.

My 80 year old uncle lives in Finley. Never had a case of Covid there, ever. He sailed through 2020 with minor inconvenience only, such as wearing a mask on his chin when they went into Victoria to play bowls, they'd never had hard lockdown until just recently and the 2-3 weeks of it nearly drove him mad.
He'd speak to mum each Sunday and sook and sulk about things, she was entirely sympathetic (not) after enduring over 200 days of it down here.
It's so tough for the regional people and I don't get the logic of people so desperate for a pub or cafe meal that they'd risk carrying the virus to untainted areas. Seriously, the delivery options in the metro area are so much greater than for rural and regional.

Just watching the news, a little bit of belated sense from the Vic Government, setting up a pop up vaccination clinic in Broady for walk ups, complete with interpreters. The Hume Mayor has been calling for it for a while and was pleased to see the "culturally appropriate" clinic finally up and with no shortage of takers.

These articles illustrate the concern I have about allowing people to go unvaccinated by "choice". It isn't really a personal choice when it has the potential to impact everybody else so significantly. I don't think we want people to be missing out on hospital care because they don't have a "vaccination passport" but if we don't do more to contain and confine the present outbreaks it's inevitable that fully-vaccinated people will die of all sorts of other life-threatening conditions for which no vaccination is available.
