I posted an article a week or so ago, the Victorian Public Health system is a mess, similar to WA. The fact that Covid patients would overwhelm it says more about the state of the system.

The NSW system will be similarly overrun. Think about it - every COVID ICU patient will be there for weeks. That simply isn't what ordinarily happens with other conditions. For the most part, people have a brief crisis and move on. I appreciate that's not always the case but it is, typically, with much emergency treatment.

I'm sure you took careful note that they're reporting the current Melbourne outbreak commenced on 12 July, too.

If it went Bunta like in the UK, absolutely they'd be overwhelmed but my sense is that the NSW public health system is currently more robust than either of Victoria or WA.

The NSW Health department seem to think they can manage, and in a cause for optimism it seems NSW cases have not just plateaued but they've managed to flatten the curve.

NSW presently has about 40% of its ordinary ICU capacity taken up by COVID patients. That has massive knock-on effects, whether the media catch on or not.

Sick people are sick people.

If floods of people go to Hospital they'll be in the general medical wards and ICU. They shouldn't impact Surgical beds unless the other areas are overwhelmed in which case you close non urgent surgery and re allocate resources, then potentially other people die.

The trick is to not let the cases get high enough to overwhelm the system.
