The plan then is to not go back to elimination and Covid zero plans, but keep the numbers at a manageable level while starting to wind back restrictions.

Meanwhile, as we are in Spring looking forward to summer and opening up, in the UK they're in Autumn and preparing to lock down again.

Two new cases were acquired overseas, and 36 previously reported cases have been excluded following further investigation.
The total number of cases in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic is 46,818. Sadly, NSW Health has been notified of the deaths of 12 people who had COVID-19.

There were 137,498 COVID-19 tests reported to 8pm last night, compared with the previous day’s total of 114,084.
....

The Guardian article (for which you have the front page amongst that bundle) contains a good account of the UK Government's expert panel (SAGE) advice. It is sobering. That article also includes some charts which show that, despite the extensive vaccination effort in the UK, the moving 7-day averages of cases, hospitalizations and deaths are all up substantially on the corresponding position 12 months ago: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/ ... sage-warnsstui magpie wrote:Meanwhile, as we are in Spring looking forward to summer and opening up, in the UK they're in Autumn and preparing to lock down again.

I have a memory that in early 2020, we had bugger all ICU beds in Victoria compared to NSW so the Health Minister said we were adding either 1200 or 1600 new ones. Some of that may have been fixed and some surge capacty.
Anyone know if anything actually happened or are the number of beds still woeful?

1,600 additional beds, at least. That's actually from a base of just under 500 in April 2020, it seems: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-09-02/ ... /100420728
I posted the NSW figure in this thread a couple of weeks back. I think it was in the 580s or 590s.

This AFR article (different source) says the NSW capacity across public and private systems is 850: https://www.afr.com/companies/healthcar ... 903-p58ojo
