1,600 additional beds, at least. That's actually from a base of just under 500 in April 2020, it seems: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-09-02/ ... /100420728

I posted the NSW figure in this thread a couple of weeks back. I think it was in the 580s or 590s.
The reason I asked is I've seen various different figures in different sources.

Pre Covid Vic was apparently somewhere around 400 beds and NSW around 800.

Vic has increased capacity supposedly but the numbers are unclear. Total capacity increase including surge is somewhere between 1200 and 1600 depending on source but I can't find anything on what the actual increase is.

I'd read that ABC article, it's quite good as it also describes how ICU's may be staffed by re-purposing other suitably qualified staff.

FWIW this is one source of ICU beds in 2018. https://www.statista.com/statistics/110 ... -by-state/

The total number of ICU beds quoted in the country there is very close to the number quoted in this article from last month which is another reason I doubt the alleged increases.

Increases all appear to be surge capacity.

In Victoria, there will be a "new" reason for leaving the home - "outside social interaction" in a group of 2 or, if you're fully vaccinated in a group of 5 (but from a maximum of two households).

Time for outdoor exercise doubles to 4 hours and the distance you can travel goes up to 10 km from 5 km.

There are various other bells and whistles. I'll try to post a link to the list when available.

From the ABC blog:
From 11:59pm on Friday, construction workers will not be allowed to travel back and forth between metropolitan Melbourne and regional areas.

Premier Daniel Andrews says movement from construction workers was a risk to regional communities and it was no longer safe.

"They're not easy decisions to make but there is no alternative," he said.
Vaccines will be mandatory for Victorian construction workers
Those who work in the sector will need to get their first does by next Thursday, September 23.

Daniel Andrews says there will be some limited medical exemptions but: "That industry needs to take this seriously."

There'll also be some limited exemptions if people can prove they've booked an appointment.

Tea rooms will need to close and food and drink can't be consumed indoors at work.

A small update from the NSW presser:
“I want to stress that of those 12 people who passed away, 10 people were not vaccinated.”
Another way of putting that, of course, is that 2 of the 12 people who died yesterday were vaccinated.
