Gee Whizz, we were undefeated in the VFLW last year and had our GF taken away because of the lockdowns, and now we've come out in round 1 and been smashed.

1.3 (9) to 4.5 (29)

Sadly, Essendon and Geelong (our biggest threats last year) are the favourites to win the flag. Essendon beat the Dogs by 98 points yesterday. They kept the Dogs scoreless.

Disappointing start to the year. Especially after we had our flag basically taken away by covid.

Round game review:

https://www.afl.com.au/news/704362/roun ... g-comeback

Pies were missing a few players compared to last year. Maddy Shevlin, Jasmine Ferguson & Kristy Stratton are no longer at the club and several players had been called up into the AFLW (Barnett, Purcell, Smith). As with the AFLW there is a bit of a gap b/w the top players and the mid & bottom tier - talent is still spread too thin.

In 2021 Pies won both games against the Saints by 22 and 15 points respectively. From memory there wasn't that much b/w the top teams in 2021.

Also in 2021 there were games where AFLW listed players played which helped with results. Not sure how this will pan out in 2022. Hopefully Jordan Membrey and Jo Lin can return from LTI and get a run in the VFLW.

Having said that watching the game the Saints were far too quick and better at ground level on Sunday. Pies were too slow and got caught with the ball quite a few times. There were a few good passages of play but couldn't get the ball past the half forward line.

May be a change for the AFLW as Elle Chaston not playing for VFLW. Pies down a player early, Sara King looks like split webbing in hand. Went down to rooms and bandaged up now, out for the rest of the game.

I really want to win this competition. After having the GF taken away last year when the team was 18-0 going into the GF.

So far we're 6th on the ladder with a record of 2-1. Essendon, Geelong and Casey are undefeated and all have massive percentages.
