I honestly think it’s just about wanting to play with his brother and be back in Geelong. I think back to when he was dropped months ago and a couple of Nicksters said it was because he needed to work on his ground work and defensive play. They were spot on.

I find that hard to believe. If true, it's rather strange that he has most recently been listed as an emergency. The simple fact is he was overtaken by 'Magic' Johnson, who, after all, is a few years older than him. My guess is, if AJ got injured this week, then Ollie would be selected in our GF team if we make it there. I can understand him wanting to play with his brother. As long as we get a decent trade from him, then I wish him well, except when he plays against us of course.

I reckon the kid is gunna be good enough. He should knuckle down and if he’s good enough he’ll get in our best 22 next year. Shouldn’t be letting the fact he ain’t in the side now or the McStay arrival next year cloud his judgement. Just means he’s gotta work harder. If his management want out we should play hardball. He was a high draft pick and we should be looking for max compensation. If not, he stays. Might be the making of him.

I can tell you what is a fact. He has the most “ modest “ heat map of any medium forward I have seen in the game. The ground he ( doesn’t ) cover can easily be checked on the AFL app. He simply covers no ground during a game. I’m trying not to put the boots in because he has some talent but you will not get a game as a medium forward in a McRae coached team unless you either apply relentless pressure, get up and down the ground or play your role defensively when we don’t have the ball.
Time to move on. The kid doesn’t want to play for Collingwood. No big deal. He’s been seduced by a club who has offered him better, so he’s not the first and he won’t be the last. Take the pick coming back and just hope we turn it into something good.

But that begs the question. Why does he think there is a club who "offers him better"? Is it just a question of immaturity: at present, he is pushing back because he doesn't like critical feedback? Why wouldn't he want to play for a Collingwood team that is so exhilarating right now??
Maybe another area for our improvement going forward? Win these recalcitrant young ones over? Or is that just the way it has to go: some will just get their backs up when confronted with the necessary standards?

That exposure at other clubs reduces the Cats risk by not taking them as18year olds. The Cats monitor them and then offer them a chance to be closer to home and family, that semi rural lifestyle that suits many and an average contract. It’s a possible risk you take by drafting Falcons ( or Rebels ) but in this instance it didn’t seem like Collingwood worked to hard to keep him, so we will see how Ollie’s future pans out over the course of time.

Wow...well that is very enlightening. The sneaky Cats get other clubs to develop their Falcons, and then entice them back home with the promise of a bucolic paradise.
I have been extremely bemused at why we haven't played Henry and seemed to shut him out, even after his scoring brilliance.
I guess that what Fly and the coaches are concluding is that if he bucks up against the idea of improving his defensive and offensive play off the ball, then he will never measure up, because the opposition will be able to limit his brilliance and then exploit his lack of impact off the ball. We would be wasting our time, while we could be developing instead a more receptive young talent.
I guess also the fact that his brother is at Geelong acts as another factor in his mind. He thinks, as a young kid, well my bro is at Geelong, I don't need these "old" guys telling me I need to improve my defensive play when i can kick over 20 goals at AFL level already.
It is really disappointing, because this kid is obviously very gifted. But I guess that, as in every aspect of teaching, you can't capture every kid's heart.

I do have to laugh. He's worried about McStay coming in but he wants to go to a club and try and play alongside Hawkins, Cameron and Rohan. Not a chance he'll get a gig in there. I dont get it. Good luck.
