Slimy disgraceful event ruined by FIFA, but that was an awesome gutsy Aussie win. What a class header from Duke. All G&D after that. Brilliant!

Spain and England have shortened after their big wins. Are they the real deal? Or just Steve Smith-like flat-track bullies and downhill skiers?

Both followed up with draws:
England 0-0 USA. :o
Spain 1-1 Germany.

England... ouch! But not quite as bad as Smith when there's a teeny weeny bit of sideways movement.

The commentator said Spain & Germany are both "works in progress". They had their moments...

Baum on Eriksen:

"In the past nine months, Christian Eriksen has played more than 40 matches of high-level football, scoring for Brentford, Manchester United and Denmark. It would be a proud page in any footballer’s CV. But Eriksen has done all this since he died.
...

Eriksen had suffered a cardiac arrest due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator inserted. One impact was that he was unable to return to Inter Milan, his club at the time, because the device contravened Italian soccer regulations. It would have been academic to him at the time.

But after eight months of rehabilitation, Eriksen did come back. He signed a six-month contract with Brentford before being lured to Manchester United in the English Premier League. He returned to Parken to play an international for Denmark, and within two minutes of coming on, scored. Hans Christian Andersen couldn’t have written a better script, although his weren’t bad."

What a sensational goal by Leckie! With Tunisia leading France's B team the Aussies have to win. Currently up 1-0.

Yes! Aussies through to the round of 16! What a gem of a goal from Leckie to get through. Well worth a look even if you're not a soccer fan.

^I saw Maradonna play in the flesh at the Sydney Football Stadium in a WC qualifying game back in something like 1992, and it's one of my great sporting memories. Whatever happens against Argentina, the Socceroos get to play against Messi in his last World Cup, which is a memory they've all earned.

Graeme Arnold is rightly getting plaudits over here for the team spirit and attitude he has fostered, and for doing things like bringing the lad with the knee injury on crutches into the huddle, providing a positive sporting note to an otherwise grim FIFA debacle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTP8v5O2PQE - Every touch Diego had in that game.

Australia is presently ranked 38th in the World. To get to play Argentina (ranked 3rd in the World), they beat the 30th team (Tunisia), knocked out the 10th team (Denmark) and lost to the 4th (France). Meanwhile, the 2nd (Belgium), 11th (Germany), 13th (Mexico), 18th (Wales) and 19th (Iran) have already tumbled out at the Group stage.

^That's it, 93.

I was also at the infamous Iran qualifier in I think 97 at the MCG when Australia were cruising something like 3-0 and a serial streaker disrupted the game by swinging on the cross bar, after which the Socceroos collapsed and were beaten on the away goals rule!

Have I mentioned the one where I watched a game near a castle in the south of Germany at the 2006 WC? We watched Australia vs. Japan at a pub near a famous castle, the name of which I forget, and an entire bus load of Japanese tourists arrived to do the same. Timmy Cahill scored a brace and boy did I let them know it. I was lucky to get out alive!

The only actual WC game I've seen live was Germany vs. Paraguay on Jeju Island at the Korea/Japan WC in 2002.

2026 might be a good chance to visit Canada, I reckon, avoiding the dangerous third-world hosts to the south!
