With this type of thing you need to hold two perspectives at once. First, you've got the genuine need for defence, which is responsible risk management. Then, that inevitably involves persuading a mix of people, some dedicated and some without better options, into signing up to do a thankless and periodically deadly task.

At the same time, you've also got the natural creepiness of isolated, opaque, authoritarian organisations. You need them, but they will always attract their share of crazies and deviants, and create a good number more.

The judge is a right wing stooge who effectively declared that McBride had to be imprisoned for a lengthy period because he disobeyed orders to keep secret the war crimes committed by Australian military personnel.
This verdict comes at a time when the Albanese government is denouncing anti-genocide protesters as anti-Semitic, and is refusing to lift a finger to defend Julian Assange as the UK "justice" system prepares to hand him over to the US war criminals/psychopaths.
The albanese government, with the full support of the socalled 'oppposition" are working together on an agenda to suppress and intimidate all opposition to war. The Vetting Process to get your security clearance is pretty full on. Each level comes with increased scrutiny. The levels are baseline, Negative 1, and Negative 2; the old top secret is "Positive Vetting". It's made clear what happens if you breach the laws that have been in place for decades.
