McClelland Trophy

Post by LaurieHolden »

The AFL results across the men’s and women’s competitions each year are combined to award the McClelland Trophy to the Champion Club. The trophy comes with a $1 million prize to be shared across the players and winning club.

The McClelland Trophy was previously given to the VFL or AFL club which performed best across seniors, reserves and under 19s.

The McClelland Trophy was relaunched this year to include AFLW, with $1 million in prizemoney up for grabs to be shared between the club and all its players.
Four points are awarded for AFL wins and two for AFL draws, while eight points are granted for AFLW wins and four for AFLW draws, given the fact the AFLW season runs for only 10 rounds.

AFL wins will be worth four points, and draws two, while AFLW wins will be worth eight points, and draws four. This formula will be reviewed based on changes to season length.

The run home for the revamped McClelland Trophy is closer than ever. Undefeated reigning premier Melbourne looked the likely winner ahead of round six but its loss to Adelaide at Casey Fields on Saturday has opened the door for rivals to seize the trophy.

Similarly, Collingwood has shot into contention with its stunning win over Brisbane that leaves the Pies just one win behind the Demons.
Melbourne (104 points) is now just four points clear of Brisbane (100) in second, with Collingwood (96) and Adelaide (92) both within striking distance.

The round 10 clash between Brisbane and Melbourne still looms as the most likely decider for the $1 million prize, but there are some key games in coming rounds that will shape the race.

Round seven
Collingwood faces a potentially difficult game against Carlton on Sunday afternoon. The Blues are fifth on the McClelland Trophy ladder and remain a mathematical chance of claiming the honour ahead of this weekend's games.

That'd be a nice bonus to end both the AFL & AFLW season and further swell the Club coffer$.

C'mon girls!

Melbourne still remain on the box seat courtesy of their AFLW team.
They have been the most impressive team so far this season.

Brisbane dealing with a few internal issues (2 players dropped last week after partying instead of preparing for the game).

Pies are not playing consistent footy.
The toughed it out against Brisbane but need to kick some bigger scores.
Likely to get a couple of players back from injury but lost 2 defenders to suspension for the Blues game.

Came on here to say this... they are going to cost us the McClelland. I still want it. Even though 90% of supporters would say... the what trophy!?

The $1M wouldnt go astray either.

We need 3 McClelland Trophies to equal the most held by one club. (Geelong have 11).

Geelong won theirs prior to the AFL changing the rules to include AFLW wins so it is going to be hard to equal their record.

And the $ the Pies miss out is probably made up by the money in merch sales since the grand final - I although agree an extra $mil wouldn’t go astray :D

Big match on a number of fronts come this w/e.
Consolidate a position in the 8 and keep pace with Brisbane in a hope they go down to Adelaide to keep us in contention.

Imagine the legacy of getting an additional $1m spend into the women's program over next 24 months.

It's still on. Altho unlikely.

We need to win last two games and hope the Dees and Lions lose at least 1.

Our stupid loss to the Swans gonna bite us.

Wrong S team, it was the Saints.

Still a bad loss, up by 5 goals and overrun. Could also cost a spot in the finals.

Brisbane lost to St Kilda in the AFLW today.

Melbourne has won the McClelland Trophy with us being a game and 18% behind them.

Just jumped on to say the Saints did us a favour...

But our shite start to the AFLW season has cost us.

We can still tie Melbourne on points, but wont be able to chase down 18%.

Disappointing really. We won 3 more games in the AFL and so far are 3 games behind in the AFLW. Also worth pointing out there's 18 teams playing a ten round competition, so it really isnt a level playing field.

Collingwood as a club deserved this prize. And the Dees will get it because of an uneven AFLW competition.

It is a stupid system. There should be separate trophies for the men's and womens' competitions.

What next, a combined premiership?

Melbourne wins the first combined McClelland Trophy.

Pies behind from the start with the AFLW not getting off to a good start and Melbourne has had some big wins, hence their huge percentage.

Stupid? That's hardly going to progress a discussion and against our Side-by-Side ethos.
There are existing trophies for their respective competitions, this hasn't changed.
It's worth noting the McLelland trophy was originally a tally from the VFL/AFL - seniors, Reserves, and Under-19s.

As such the competition has evolved since the AFL origins, and with it so should our thinking with what that now represents.

Might it be a progressive outcome to align the teams given they play under the same Club banner?
The teams share Club resources, and our ethos acts to align our Club through leadership in our culture, football programs and community.
That's something I'm happy to stand behind.

The AFLW is too lopsided for this to be fair. 18 teams and a 10 round season. AFLW worth double points.

Imagine that the Crows won this and the mens team finished 10th.

But in saying all that, we should have beaten the Saints and Swans in the womens. And I'm annoyed this isnt ours.

But which trophy do you really want? They dont have reunion McClelland Trophy diners.
