While it’s obvious what Collingwoods “ ambitions “ are on draft night, I think the real story is more about to what extent any other club has committed to assisting us move up the draft order. Sure a club will reciprocate if there’s something in return for them but what if any one of 16 other clubs can offer something better on the night.
To be fair, that pick swap was so insignificant AT THE TIME, even if we don’t improve our position again on the night, it won’t have likely altered our final haul at all.
There’s still of a bit of uncertainty to play out on the second night regarding where some later bids will come, specifically Cole ( saints NGA ) and the first Camporeale in particular. So, while the club has set the foundations for moving up the order, there are still no guarantees we will improve our position yet again on the night … or are there ?

Brisbane will burn 58, and Sydney have 59. Likely we may have an inkling who Sydney is interested in at that pick. Nothing was lost, and a swap opportunity was created.

I also didn't realize that Sims and Stumpf were teammates at the Northern Nights. Be good to get a meal deal and pick up both of them if we can...assuming of course that they actually like each other...

A question I have is why are three clubs going in with only 2 selections? I thought each club had to take at least 3 players? Crows, Dees and North all have just 2 selections?

(i) At a National Draft Selection Meeting:
(A) each Club shall exercise a minimum of 3 Draft selections
(including selections forfeited under Rules 8.7, 10.11(a), 13.4(b),
14.4(d) and 15.8(b)); and
(B) no Club may exercise more than 3 Draft selections if the
consequence would be that it would exceed the number of Players
which it is entitled to include on its Primary List pursuant to these
Rules.
(ii) If a Club, prior to the National Draft Selection Meeting, has committed to
draft a Player at the Pre-Season Draft Selection Meeting that Player will
be deemed to be included on the Club’s Primary List when determining
how many Draft selections a Club is entitled to exercise at the National

I think it's not so much that the clubs don't have the picks as they can / will trade their future picks on the night to get back in to the draft. That is based on the proviso that there will be clubs (such as Collingwood) who have more picks than slots. The important thing is highlight 2, which is having at least 3 senior slots open before the draft begins.

Legalese mate...damn lawyers always write stuff to be clear as mud. And good luck finding out a definitive source of current club lists and contracts. It is when you look at this sort of stuff you realize how unprofessional and seemingly disorganized the AFL is. Perhaps this is by design, to keep out the riff raff and add profit to their "associates" (ie mates) through unnecessary complexity.

Rookie Central has him at 197cm, and going between 20-40. So yeah, maybe we could though do want to spend our fist pick on a key forward or key defender? His strengths are intercept marking, reading the play, and his pace / athleticism. Future replacement for Darcy Moore?

I'm not jumping on that bandwagon just yet.

Very appealing at pick 52, but with so many better KP going before him, we will get what we pay for. Of course, like anyone, we would hope for further development. Right now, does he look any better than Eyre's?.

As opposed to other options such as Charlie West for example , who may develop into a point of difference beast.

Charlie Nichols @ 50 ~ Central District/South Australia – FWD, 197cm ~ The tall forward moves extremely well for his height, able to get into great spots with his leading patterns inside 50, and the ability to push higher up the ground and make use of his kicking in transition.
Hugh Boxshall @ 54 ~ Claremont/Western Australia – MID, 188cm ~ Boxshall has generated some good interest off the back of strong combine testing, presenting well as an endurance-based midfield with some spark around the stoppage, and a tough body with his tackling pressure.

Sam Toner @ 58 ~ Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country – FWD, 184cm ~ The Narre-Warren local came into contention with a plethora of goal-scoring performances at local level, seeing him get the invite to Dandenong, where he turned it on yet again with a bag of five goals early in his Talent League career. Injury unfortunately brought an early end to 2024, but his upside is quite evident.

Interesting. Leppa is the list manager, Hine is the Head Recruiter

There is overlap, and I reckon not every club works the same way as to who has the final say.

My reckoning in a picking-for-need scenario, Leppa defines the type, and Hine advises the who.
Who has the final say technically would probably be Leppa... Hine calls it. If either is in major conflict with the other, I'd be concerned.

One thing for sure this year every phantom draft / mock draft has been different with a variety of top5 picks and a random generator beyond it.

This could be the most interesting draft in a while. Has been almost boring hearing Cal Twomey’s mock draft being read out almost verbatim.
