Attaching Photos

Can someone tell me how to make a jpg photo the correct size for attaching to a post. I have some from the season Launch and they are way too large. I can email them to someone if they can resize them for me.

I know its been asked before, but I haven't time to look at the moment, sorry.

The best and easiest way to do it is to open the photo up in paint or something similar, and then image, then sketch/skew, and you can then alter the size.

I find irfanview is really useful for basic photo manipulation. I'm not sure, but I think you can download it for free.

Kaylene, photo dimensions are not important, file size is.

Unless you can reduce the physical size of the photo to 50kb or less, you still won't be able to post them. Using paint for this method will quite possibly turn your photos into thumbnail size, and making them too hard to actually see.

If you don't have proper photo editing software, your best option would be to create an account with somewhere like Photobucket and upload your photos there, then post the link for those who want to see them. However, this method is frowned upon unless your have prior approval;

The use of inline () image tags pointing to data stored on third party systems to which the member has not received permission to link may be removed.

For your photos to be available to anyone, you will have to ensure your account is made public (no, you don't need to supply your account name or password).

If you want to use software, I use The GIMP, which can be found at http://www.gimp.org/ which is a free alternative to Photoshop. PS can set you back quite a few hundred dollars.

Thanks for the tips everyone, and Dale, I will have a close look at the gimp site. I do need to learn how to put a good smiley face onto another photo. Its really hard to get 3 grandkids all smiling at once!

I opened the saved photo with Mircrosoft Office Picture Manager then went to picture, and resize. Then to large email size. Easy as pie!

Dale, I think it more refers to copyrighted pictures. Sites like photobucket etc expect people to use tags etc in forums linked to their pictures. I think on sites that can handle the load, it would be fine.

I also think that that rule has something to do with most people being on dialup etc when the rules where written.

So, does that mean in future, if I take, say, 100 photos from a Williamstown game, I can use image tags to post ALL the photos in a single post?

As it is now, if we attach images using the facility as per the board, we can only post 10 photos per post.

Can you prove to me that it's not possible to post 20, 30, 40, 100 image tags with a single post?

The only thing I know for certain is that 10 images are the max if using the 'Post Attachment' facility.

Strangely, the FAQ contradicts that of what's written in the rules.

This, from the FAQ's:

Images can indeed be shown in your posts. You can either upload images directly to this board as a part of a post or link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g. http://www.some-unknown-place.net/my-picture.gif. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. To display the image use either the BBCode [img] tag or appropriate HTML (if allowed).

This from The Rules:

Members are also asked to respect the bandwidth of other users and sites. The use of inline () image tags pointing to data stored on third party systems to which the member has not received permission to link may be removed.

Therefore, the FAQ's say that you can use image tags as you see fit, and as required, but the rules state that you need permission to link them. Who's permission would that be? That of the third party server of that of the mods of Nick's?

Dale, you are being pedantic, and you know it, and if you don't then....seriously.

Yes, it is probably possible, but I don't think it would be sensible to post that many. We are not getting off track anyway.

Btw, the FAQ is older than the rules - probably an oversight.

If a site is set up specifically to hold your photos (eg photobucket) and they don't have any restrictions on hot-linking then there is no problem at this end. I think you can assume implicit permission to link to sites like photobucket - they will certainly have hotlink protection in place if they don't want you doing it.

That rule was designed to prevent people linking to images not owned by them on other servers and consequently creating a load on that server. That practice tends to start 'desist and refrain' correspondence flowing.

As system administrator I have no problem with you linking 100 images in a post. Your audience might be limited a bit with people on dial up and slower broadband finding it difficult, if not impossible, to load and view a topic that contains 100 images, but if that's what you want to do then I can't think of another reason why you couldn't do it. It certainly doesn't place any load on this system.
