Come on Sachmojo, look at what you have to do in everyday life to get by. i think the reason so much is being said and written about caro/hutchy is that people can sense that we are seeing journalism in footy being taken to a new low this season. players, coaches and now presidents are speaking up about it because they don't like what's happening and they want some limits in place.

you had three club presidents getting together and being very angry about these journo's.

i agree that mark robinson did come across as being genuinely concerned about his character and his trade. the other two believe they have the right to decide where the acceptable limits of what constitutes news are. and certainly in hutchy's case he's happy to make a name and a career for himself as a purveyor of gutter journalism. I guess the fleet street papers provided some kind of balance years ago before descending on a slide to just pumping out poisonous, libelous shit.

Do I want to read about injuries and stories about Nathan Buckley's wife's shoe shop. Yes. I also want to read about AFL plans for our game and analytical stories about the game's future. Sexism, racism in footy??? Sure, I want to read about it. Was I interested in fistycuffs in channel nine studios? Yep, I was mildly interested. Should Caro have written the story? Probably not.

Tess, I'm not sure that you assumption that the majority of AFL fans don't like her writing, is true either. Maybe the AFL fans you talk to don't like her, but that doesn't mean you are able to speak for the majority.

there was a thread here a little while ago about the ugliest players in the afl. and there was a segment on the footy show about the ugly team of the century. where were you then ? their looks have no bearing on their ability to play footy. why didn't you coming rushing to their defence ? maybe you have a thing about caro ?

i don't read her column much anymore. i read the age on the web and if i see the headline is another "human interest" piece (read, maliciously trying to tear someone down) i pass on it. i stopped reading patrick smith's column years ago. most of my view regarding caro in the last couple of months is based on her appearances on footy classified.

caro and hutchy are well on their way to becoming the andrew bolts of footy. that's what bothers me. i love footy and i love reading about it and watching footy tv shows about it. i reckon the people we're discussing here do a poor job of covering the game and we deserve better. in other threads, myself and others have pointed out examples of other journo's who do a great job but don't get the same airplay or the title of "chief football writer".

if my wife or daughter were on the receiving end of comments about their appearance, the person making them would find out that they have a pretty good sense of perspective and give as good as they get. they wouldn't need daddy to come and save them. i doubt there'd be a big drama in our household that day. i can say with confidence that caro has caused more grief to people with her column than anything thrown around here would have hurt her. even she would agree with that.
