Playing well for Port Melbourne does not mean that he is AFL standard. I do have to admit I didn't watch today's match - Did he star?

To be honest, although I liked Fanning, I can't quite figure out what Mick saw in him. True, we've been light on in the ruck since Monky left, but Fanning didn't really look like he'd ever make it.

Of course, though, it's good to see him playing well now, and who knows, he could even make it somewhere else in the future.

Dave, how did I know, when I saw Fanning impress in the first term, that I'd see this up here. :)

Had a blinder BOG in fact and whilst it is VFL he showed what he is really made of. And it wasn't as if his opposition ruckman were hacks either...Minson and Skipper..are Dogs listed players who Fanning smashed.

Just so happens that Brayden Shaw and Julian Rowe also stood out.

Port Melbourne are not a bad side considering they are a stand alone VFL club.

Instead of lamenting the decision to let him go (or celebrating, whatever your opinion is), why not applaud the guy for knuckling down in the VFL and playing good football, which is what I think Collingwood supporters would like to see of Fanning ( and Port Melbourne is a great team to be playing for).

its good to see Fanning doing well. I didnt mind him when he was with us, despite thinking he shouldnt be getting a game. Along with Fanning it was really good to see Julian Rowe getting a kick, really liked this kid when he got a game.

Good luck to them.

Back to the question, i think we made the right move in getting rid of Fanning.

Exactly, BIFC. If Fanning's worth anything currently, he'd have been drafted by another AFL club.

If we had a list of 50, of course we would have kept him, but then it comes down to a decision of who we keep out of Fanning or Richards (or Cameron Cloke for that matter). With ruckmen you need a crystal ball to predict how they are going to turn out. With Fanning, because of his basketball background, it was always going to take a lot of time before he came good. Unfortunately AFL clubs no longer have the time to wait for players to come good so they have to make judgements about players based on perceived weaknesses in their game (in the case of Fanning lack of ground skills, CC weak shoulders, Rowe poor kicking and B.Shaw lack of pace).

I watched that game... his disposal seems to have improved... his ruckwork still isnt that flash....

IMO both he and Richards are useless....

One good game doesnt make him a star...
