Whoa there, Jac. I said that I found it a little odd, didn't necessarily have a problem with it. Actually ordered from the same place again last week and it was great.
Last night the girls brought back some gourmet 'Pizza by the metre' from Lygon st while we were watching the footy and that was just on another level. yum
lol, stui

Jacqui I'm sure it's no deeper than the fact that most people who want to work in Asian takeaway shops are Asian. It gives you a chance to work with other people who speak your first language, make traditional food that you prefer, etc... makes sense to me.

I didn't say only Italians can cook Italian food but now that you mention it - Anyone can attempt to cook Italian food. Dominos, Pizza Hut, Pizza Haven and Heinz (spaghetti) all make 'Italian' food but if you gave it to an Italian they'd probably throw up.magpie greg wrote:The fault in your argument is that it is based on the premise that only Italians can cook Italian food, which of course is not true.JacJacJacqui wrote:Hmm, I wonder why I've never seen a non-Asian in an Asian take-away then? Must be only a one-way law. If it's ok for them then... I reckon it's the one case where discrimination should be allowed. It's like going to a Catholic church and having the sermon read by a rabbi. It just doesn't quite make sense, what do they know about the religion? Or in this case, what do they know about the culture or language. If I owned a restaurant everyone would get an interview but really, who wants someone working for them who can't even read the menu? That'd probably be the basis of my decision, call it discrimination if you will.
They dont have to be Italian to be able to pronounce the items on the menu.
How many Asian take aways have you canvassed to base your statistics?
And no, you don't have to be Italian to pronounce menu items but it certainly helps, hence the whole bruschetta story.
And I have canvassed MANY Asian take-away stores because (a) I love Asian food, (b) they're everywhere and (c) I like to shop, so I've been all over Melbourne - I live in the sticks and I work in the city, I reckon I've seen a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot of Asian take-aways - STILL LOOKING! I'd estimate my 'canvassing' somewhere in the hundreds, possibly thousands if you want to include my trips to NSW and QLD. Meanwhile, no one on here has mentioned one that hires people of other ethnicities so that's as good as verification to me.
And Stui, remove the H from bruschetta and you get bruscetta - dunno where you get this 'broosetta' pronunciation from..
