IS AUSTRALIA THE BEST FIELDING SIDE STILL ?

Post by JLC »

Ricky Ponting stated in the week that he believes we are. However after watching some of the recent efforts i find that hard to believe. Have Australia become complacent in the field ? I would say South Africa in the one day arena would be the best. Gibbs and Rohdes patrol the covers and generally they are pretty good in the outfield.

What does everyone else think ?

Is Beven the most over rated fielder going around ?? He seems to drop plenty of catches and can't even throw the ball powerfully(due to shoulder ??)

Good point, Assasin. The standard of fielding in just about all the teams is so high, these days, that a fielding mistake, of any kind, looks glaring.

From when Simmo started coaching the Aussies, we have set the standard, a standard that other teams aim at. One or two have succeded in this, notably South Africa.

Bevo has never been a brilliant fieldsman and recently, when he's outfielding, more batsmen are taking another run on his arm. His two dropped catches, in the last two games, were embarrassing. More for Bev, I suspect, than anyone else. I noticed a technical fault, however. Both times he took his eyes off the ball before it reached his hands.

Donny.

Out of the current team Ponting is brilliant and is the benchmark for the others to follow.

For a player of his height McGrath is great although sometimes i worry when he throws himself about as you dont want him to get injured.

They have definately been terrible lately! A few dropped catches here and there is acceptable but just the past few games I feel that this has increased enormously. When quality bowlers are out of the side dropped catches cannot be tolerated! There is no excuse for poor fielding!

South Africa is the best fielding side by a street.....only Donald makes the odd mistake but he is old and can be forgiven....

Jonty is easily the best fielder in the world....
