SYMONDS
Let me be the first to congratulate Andrew Symonds on a magnificent knock the other day. He played a fine innings (a pity it's all too rare!!!)

Yup i have been one of his critics and im not ashamed to admmit that. After 5 long years maybe he has finally turned the corner and he couldn't have chosen a better stage to perform. It was not only a great innings but it came at a time when Australia needed it which makes it even better.
Symonds reminds me of Mark Richardson (tok richo about 6 or 7 years to perform) in that if you give someone enough chances then they are bound to take the chance sooner or later

I'm not sure that we can say that he has "turned the corner" just yet - one good match does not a great cricketer make!
I'll reserve my judgement, I think!
But I certainly believe that he deserves all the accolades he gets for this one game - as you say, JLC, it couldn't have come at a better time for Australia (except maybe in the final )

Andrew Symonds innings ranks as one of the best in World Cup history. His 143 in 125 balls with 18 fours and two sixes would stand as a magnificent (a very suitable word, Kristin) knock in any situation but for him to have done it in the circumstances he did, places it up there with the greats.
Australia are the defending WC champions and the clear favourites. They are without their usual middle order, Lehmann, Bevan and Watson, they lose their star bowler on the eve of the match, Gilchrist, Hayden, Martyn and Maher are back in the dressing room with 54 runs on the board, Akram is running rampant and Australia is staring an embarrassing opening game loss squarely in the eyes.
Symonds comes to the crease with more critics than well wishers (JLC had a lot of mates) and gets his head down. His skipper, and best supporter, was still playing his usual, attacking style amongst the carnage and together they added 60 runs.
Symmo was building an innings and had been concentrating hard. When Ponting went, he blossomed. Brad Hogg gave excellent back-up as the pair put on a quick 70 runs (Hogg 14).
Next, he and Ian Harvey raced to a 54 run 7th. wicket partnership as the Pakis looked on, shellshocked.
22 more with Brett Lee and 18 with Dizzy and the amazing turnaround was complete. The last 20 overs produced 160 runs! 8/310!!
Andrew Symonds, take a bow. That innings would have to rank in my top ten, ever!
Donny.

Donny you should be a richmond supporter as should most of the other Symonds bandwagon supporters. Its amazing how they all come running out of the closet as soon as he makes one big score.
Shut the closet door on ya way out!!!!!
BTW thank Watson for getting injured otherwise he wouldnt have got a game.

I blinked and missed Martyns innings....lol Maher and Martyn are skating on VERY thin ice.
Lets face facts Symonds was on his last chance surely ?? As Symonds said when talking to Tony Greig its about time i delivered and Ponting said the same thing.
Pakistan also need to have their heads read. They bowled at such a pathetic over rate that they had to employ part timers to bowl towards the end.
Also make sure you watch the highlights to see McGrath and Symonds catches....both brilliant

"Its amazing how they all come running out of the closet as soon as he makes one big score." ??
I posted, in December: "Although I had Ian Harvey in my squad, I'm not unhappy Symonds got that spot. On his day he is capable of superlative play, on all fronts."
I'll just add a couple of CQ's quotes before you call her a bandwagoner as well: "..well I am happy that Symonds got in." - January 1 and ".. also he is an excellent fieldsman and can do a lot of damage with the bat." - Jan. 3
Here was a real chance, JLC, for you to put away your negativity and ungraciousness. This topic was started by Kristin as a tribute to a wonderful sporting achievement. The comments you made after admitting you were a critic of Symonds and saying it was a great innings are simply inappropriate.

Bandwagon - everyone will hope on the Symonds bandwagon. CQ is the one person that said Symonds was ok. Lets face facts anyone on their day can be good. Consistency is what seperates most people apart.
It was a good innings and i will admit that and he finally displayed some of his potential. But you have a look at his previous 10 to 20 innings and they are nothing short of disgraceful. Symonds even admitted it was about time he did something!! Had he shown any form in the ING Cup or One day series in Australia ?? I think i HAD EVERY RIGHT TO BE CRITICAL OF HIM as did Robert Craddock, Tony Greig and many other cricket writers. Its called having an opinion. Its pretty easy just to sit on the fence and not have an opinion but i find you tend to get splinters.
Same thing will happen if Rhyce Shaw has a good year at Collingwood

PP'03, As I've told JLC more than once (and anyone who reads this forum will know, you can't even tell him the time without getting an argument), Andrew Symonds DID NOT get Steve Waugh's spot in the WC squad! Jimmy Maher did. And part of the reason was that Maher could cover for Gilly as keeper, if needed.
Symonds got the last of the 3 all-rounder spots with Shane Watson and Brad Hogg getting the other two. As injuries had seriously diminished the chances of Ian Harvey and Shane Lee, there was only one contender left standing, really.

Assasin i would be worried about Shane Warne if i was you....lol
BTW if Aussies dont win the World Cup you will have egg on your face
So going by your theory every timr Symonds fail you will have egg on your face. Going by Symonds past we should be able to make an omlette for about 20 people.
I speak my mind. I dont think i was the only one who thought Symonds was extremely lucky to be picked. I have no regrets in saying that as his record spoke for itself. It seems Assasin that hindsight is your greatest friend.
If Bevan had a similar run as Symonds did then his place would come under question as well??

I hope Symonds ha turned the corner but that remains to be seen.
I hate to have seen you guys when Fevola kicked his big bag of goals against us. You must have been engraving his name in the John Coleman medal im sure.
