From The Age's blog:
The ACT has extended its lockdown by four weeks to Friday, October 15. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said it was the “least worst option available” and “we are all in this situation because of a failure in NSW”.

Blame deflection, so predictable

Imagine my lack of surprise when I Googled Andrew Barr and found he's Labor.

It's true, of course. It got into the ACT from NSW (by which the poor devils in the ACT are surrounded). It's no different from NSW reporting today that they had so many community cases, so many other cases acquired overseas and 1 case acquired in Victoria, save - of course - that the outbreak in NSW wasn't caused by today's case in Victoria.

Although at least you’ve admitted Victoria’s outbreak is because of incompetence by the Victorian government.

Again, I'm trying to not get sucked into state v state and blame, but lets be fair.

People ripped into Gladys for not locking down hard and fast using the Victorian model and pointed at the explosion in cases. In hind sight a reasonable criticism, except that Victoria did lock down hard and fast yet cases continue to increase in Victoria and show no sign of slowing whereas in NSW they've flattened the curve and cases are going down.

Pointing fingers and deflecting blame don't achieve very much at this stage of events, lets just get vaccinated and start releasing restrictions for the vaccinated. Get kids back to school, open skate parks FFS, keep restrictions on medium to high risk situations but let people live and work.

I think Victoria has failed to learn from last year. The sense I have is that the cases are in more or less the same geographical areas as then. I understand that the Australian domestic economy is underpinned by construction but I'm not seeing how you can keep construction open without vastly better compliance. I seem to recall eddiesmith mentioning a couple of months ago that there was spread amongst/from construction workers in the inner west, so it isn't like it started last week. Perhaps they could nail a couple of public housing high-rises shut for effect?

Yep and Sydney also had spread in construction very early on in their outbreak, was a key spread of cases to larger geographical areas like it is here as construction workers travel far and wide. Even got cases in Ballarat now from construction.

Problem is they’ve got restrictions on some projects but any government project is automatically a priority so no restrictions exist I believe.

In Victoria:
Reported yesterday: 423 new local cases and 0 cases acquired overseas.
- 41,856 vaccines administered
- 54,649 test results received
- Sadly, two people with COVID-19 have died

Of the local cases, 149 have been linked to known cases and outbreaks. Further case information will be provided this morning.
On a positive note, the testing results reported were way higher today than yesterday and the percentage of positive cases was much reduced, so that the 423 today would be comparable to 329 from the number of tests performed yesterday (rather than the 445 new cases that were actually recorded yesterday).

It's a positive, if the case numbers can plateau then they can start going down.

The plan then is to not go back to elimination and Covid zero plans, but keep the numbers at a manageable level while starting to wind back restrictions.
