He looked a bit off the pace to me and was in and out of the game a fair bit. I did notice he did a bit of inside work which he probably isn't really built for. Probably just needs a bit more match practice.roar wrote:Broomhead seemed to be involved in a lot of our scoring - is he ready, or will he require another week?

Stand outs? Josh Smith, Toovey, Wills, Phillips and Cox.qldmagpie67 wrote:MB thanks for the ongoing updates mate
Who stood out today ?
Who would be inline for a senior call up if required ?
Any news on Marsh ?
Call ups? Toovey the most likely, Phillips and Smith maybe if you want swing the axe, Cox a smokie if you want to punt Grundy...
Marsh? Didn't appear after half time. Was wearing polo and boardies after the game. Didn't look happy...

Good game to watch.
My eye seems to go naturally to the taller players, little blokes need to be special for me to notice. I liked the look of Smith
Whyatt shows promise. Agile and doesn't mind trying to throw his body in and around.
Cox is really improving. His tapwork is excellent even though he still jumps at the ruck contest like a basketballer, but he really tries to put the ball to a team mate not just whack it and more often than not, he does. His reading of the ball in the air has really come on, he's now jumping at marks at the right time and using his body really well. That performance today didn't kick the door down at selection committee but it showed enough to say that if he was picked he'd contribute.
It's clear that the game plan relies on grunt and repeat efforts, both inside and out. It's the same as the AFL team, tweaked for personnel. We're vulnerable to teams getting a fast break from the backline and going all the way if we allow loose players out the sides.

Yeah, I think touch is really the thing for him here.roar wrote:2-3 more weeks for Broomy? He had a solid pre-season so his fitness shouldn't be that bad.
edit: Just saw your post, MB. If fitness isn't that much of an issue, another week should be more than enough, as we are in desperate need for speed and skills.

I liked Marsh before he went off but sadly they call me Bill has struck again.
The reference to "They call me Bill" went through to the keeper (it could be because I'm still shocked at the photos the goat sent me of you & David)

From the TV I thought Smith was a standout.
Gault unfortunately needs his elevation to the seniors revoked & given to Smith (is he a rookie?)
Good stuff from Wills.
I would also elevate Cox although he's tall enough.
Phillips has class & finishing abilities
Toovey is an automatic inclusion in my view.

^
gault actually did some good work in the ruck and around the ground after half time. Unlucky a couple of times that others let his good work down.
Wasn't a great game from him overall, no argument but there were some good signs.
He has to really lift this year or the Sheriff will go past him as a ruck forward option, I think Cox already has.
