Port accounts for Pies

Collingwood's run of pre-season losses continued last night when Port Adelaide defeated last year's grand finalist by 14 points in front of more than 11,000 people at Traeger Park here.

The Power was never headed after opening a 16-point lead in the first quarter and won 15.15 (105) to 14.7 (91). While Port Adelaide opened aggressively, the Magpies did not find any fluency until the second half.

Collingwood was without the injured Shane Woewodin, Paul Licuria, Simon Prestigiacomo and Alan Didak and once more Mick Malthouse used his bench to give the likes of Cameron Cloke, Guy Richards, Heath Shaw, Bo Nixon and rookie Zane Leonard plenty of game time.

Richards spent much of the night in the ruck, while the other draftees spent time in the midfield pushing forward. Skipper Nathan Buckley and ruckman-forward Josh Fraser were again amongst the Magpies' best.

For Port, the performance of skipper Matthew Primus, returning from the knee and hamstring problems that ruined his 2003, would have been most pleasing. Primus only rucked for short spells but played well in front of goal and, in tandem with Warren Tredrea, gave the Power too many options in attack.

The downsides for the Power were an arm injury to ruckman Dean Brogan and umpire Scott Jeffery reporting Byron Pickett for allegedly engaging in rough play against Nathan Buckley in the fourth quarter.

PORT ADELAIDE: 4.5 7.7 11.12 15.15 (105)
COLLINGWOOD: 2.2 4.3 9.4 14.7 (91)

GOALS - Port Adelaide: B Pickett 3, W Tredrea 3, J Surjan 3, J Schofield 2, J Mahoney, J Carr, C Cornes, S Salopek. Collingwood: L Davis 2, A Williams 2, B Holland 2, A Rocca 2, J Fraser 2, H Shaw, N Buckley, Z Leonard, J Clement.
BEST - Port Adelaide: B Pickett, W Tredrea, K Cornes. Collingwood: J Fraser, R Shaw, N Buckley.
INJURIES - Port Adelaide: D Brogan (collarbone). Collingwood: nil.
UMPIRES - G Dore, M Head, S Jeffrey, C Rowston.
CROWD - 10,000 at Traeger Park, Alice Springs.

I shouldn't be posting the article, but we won't get much news on the game, and it is easier to grab som info of the game.

In regards to the game, it's good to see we are gradually reducing our losing margins (LOL), and we still had a few out, so perhaps that is pleasing sign. I also see that Andrew Williams actually kicked straight and got a couple of goals, and Rhyce Shaw was among Collingwood's best players.

Port Adelaide has beaten Collingwood by 14 points in the historic Wizard Regional Challenge Series clash in Alice Springs.

With the red rock of the MacDonnell ranges in the background, Port dominated the contest with in front of more than 10,000 fans at Traeger Park.

Port started strongly with Byron Pickett scooping up a spilled ball to run and score from 10 metres out.

Power's plan steps up a gear in Alice

Collingwood mounted a late challenge when Brodie Holland bagged his second goal 10 seconds into the final term but the Pies never got closer than 13 points. Chad Cornes went forward to kick Port's 15th goal and snuff out Collingwood's hopes after keeping Anthony Rocca to just one goal.
Assistant coach Phil Walsh, coaching in the absence of Mark Williams due to family reasons, would have been pleased with the Power's direct approach and Byron Pickett's aggressive tactics that slowed down Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley with two big bumps.

Warren Tredrea and captain Matthew Primus were too big for Collingwood’s Jason Cloke and Shane Wakelin and proved to be the difference in the forward line. Both featured prominently with Tredrea kicking a goal in each of the first three terms.

14 points is ok could have been much more.. interesting MM is persisting in giving game time to oursecond rung players. He certainly is giving them a chance and this is a luxury we can afford at the moment.

I reckon we are travelling just nicely but one thing that worries me is that there maybe a perception that we are soft. The west coast certainly played intimidatery type footy as it seems did port. The swans too seemed to be giving it out.

Although the umpires will be on the look out it will be even more critical for the boys to not take a backward step or shirk the issue in the first few games.

Byron Pickett was reported for unduly rough play on Bucks.
Do not adjust your mind. The fault is in reality.

Great to see Heath and Zaney amongst the goals and to see Rhyce go well coming back in. Neon and Dutchy also had good games apparently.
Fraser was very good and Bux had a big second half. Holland also went okay.

MM sounds very impressed with Zane Leonard.
Heath Shaw is really doing very well for a kid just arrived and whom was supposed to be way off condition/fitness wise when he arrived.
Exciting news.
