OK, Varcoe has improved in our jumper (but then I, almost alone here at Nicks, liked the Varcoe recruitment from the word go), as did Medhurst. But what is Mayne going to bring us?

(Happy to be proved wrong, but I just can't see this one.)
Is he a replacement for Blair though?

Possibly. If so, he's a better fit alongside Elliott and Fasolo due to greater height and marking power.

Could be a replacement for Crocker in 2017. In which case he's a pretty significant upgrade.

Either way, he fits into our best 22 and whether he's replacing someone of similar quality or lower quality it's a definite improvement. How often do we get to play our full best 22? Adding another capable AFL player makes it less likely we need to play those who aren't like Crocker, Goodyear etc in 2016.

Mayne offers no improvement of any great significance. He played some good football in 2013 and 2014, kicking 76 goals from 47 games, but has fallen away since. If you put aside those 2 peak years and look at the rest of his career, it becomes apparent that what you will get is a guy who has averaged less than a goal per game over his other 125 games. That's the player we'd likely be recruiting for 2017, not the guy who was a pretty good player three to four seasons earlier.

If the Club wants him because he's going to be cheapish and they want a role player, that's fine - but we shouldn't expect him to be the sort of player who will instantly transform a forward line. He doesn't have the talent of a Medhurst, for example. He might be - possibly, although the stats comparison I posted previously for 2016 doesn't really compel one to accept the claim - be a bit of an upgrade on Blair but I won't be looking for miracles. I really wouldn't want him to be keeping Crocker out of the team, if that were the plan.

Our FA picks have been slightly underwhelming

Quentin Lynch 18 games in 2013 and 0 in 2014
Clinton Young 2 games in 2013, 19 in 2014 and 0 games in 2015
Tony Armstrong 5 games in 2014 and 1 game in 2015

Chris Mayne has been very durable playing between 22 and 24 games each year since 2011. Averaged around 14 disposals per game in the same period. Kicked 18 goals in 2016.

Very happy for him to keep Crocker out of the team till (or if) he's ready. He wasn't ready this year and we would almost certainly have won more games if we didn't have to play him.

Sure he's a role player. Nothing wrong with that, you need them. Crocker's the same and not yet AFL standard. He's also another player over 25. We won't make finals without adding a few more. And while Mayne's not enough, we do need to add some players with size and some marking ability to replace Cloke. Goldsack's never really worked out for us as a forward. Mayne's a better version.

Buzz, Quentin Lynch broke his leg in the VFL during 2014, when IIRC, he was close to being recalled. He never recovered from that broken bone.

Clinton Young dropped that soda pass from Blair in front of goal, that would have given us a win against GCS in 2014. Papers got stamped for 2015; never to return, despite solid VFL form.

Tony Armstrong we got for chicken feed, and hardly disgraced himself in the few appearances he made in the seniors. We've carried players before who got much less of the ball then he ever did...

I'm all for Mayne, Maric, Harvey and Nicky Dal in 2017.

$500k a year for 4 sounds a lot- but last doesn't final 2 years only count for 1/2 in salary cap due to veterans over 30 or something??

If so- not a bad deal.

If all inclusive- probably a bit of an overpay

Fox has him at North --who knows
And the deal I have no idea how it stack up

My only thought is that he is as good a pickup
as Howe

Veterans based on years at the club, not age of the player, and it's a set discount now of about $110k.

I'd be disappointed if we were spending too much north of $400k a year on a player like Mayne.

Said elsewhere I wasn't a fan of recruiting Varcoe and Howe but they've proved me wrong, hopefully Mayne can as well.

Since 2011 till now he has hardly missed a game[if any] so wonder if he had a good run of injuries or played/coped with one.

And to be in the 22 close to every week
