Hall of Fame Thread. Fighting for Collingwood recognition
Moderator: bbmods
Collingwood could make a great argument for many players already mentioned here but the biggest injustice is the fact that Syd Coventry has still not been elevated to LEGEND status.
Captain of the only side to win 4 x premiership in a row
Brownlow Medalist
B&F winner
3 x Victorian State Captain
A legend of the era
He might not have had the post footy media career of Jack Dyer but for
all that I have read points to a player who was as big a name in football in the 1920’s and 30’s as anyone else including Dyer.
Syd Coventry not being elevated to Legend status is a travesty.

Re: Hall of Fame 2022 (Rolling Thread) ON NOW
Had to wait a further 2 years. Of course Chocco went in last year, but he is shared amongst more than just one club and it was very much about Port when he went in.Presti35 wrote:So here we are, unless you count Greg Phillips, Michael Taylor or Brad Hardie, we had Ron Todd inducted in 2017 (Shared with Williamstown) and even that was 20 years too late.
And that's it in TEN YEARS.
Now that Swanny is in there, thats 8 sole Collingwood people in 22 years. Worth pointing out that other clubs saw 2 players go in, in the same year.Presti35 wrote:Bucks went in in 2011, Shaw in 2010, G Brown and Tuddenham in 2008, Weideman in 2007, Peter Moore in 2005 and Wayne Richardson in 2003.
I'd argue that Shaw and Weideman should have been inducted earlier than they did. But that's our past 20 years on inductees.
Disgraceful that Merrett and Picken aren't already in. It was pointed out that several players that have passed away will be inducted in 2025; this could include Picken, Millane, Whelan, Rumney, Gabelich. Thorold Merrett is now 90 years old.Presti35 wrote:Thorold Merrett still waiting. Billy Picken still waiting.
Dick Condon (died in 1946).
Marcus Whelan (died in 1973).
Harold Rumney (died in 1987).
Darren Millane (died in 1991).
Ray Gabelich (died in 2000).
All forgotten by the selectors.
It was also pointed out that AFLW players will go in next year and that AFLW players have to wait 1 year after retirement to be eligible, which I find stupid.
An article written in 2017 listed the following guys as the most likely candidates to be elevated:Presti35 wrote:Dick Lee, Jack Regan, Syd Coventry, the Collier brothers all forgotten about when pushing for legend status. Will Malthouse be elevated?
*Gary Ablett snr
*Malcolm Blight
*Wayne Carey
*Jason Dunstall
*Kevin Sheedy
*Dick Lee
Three of those are now elevated. There is still controversy surrounding Carey and Gaz. Can we finally expect to see Lee get the elevation that is long overdue?
Whilst I was wrapped to see Swanny get in and the fact that it was so long so see a Pie get the nod, I am still sad that some of our deserving old timers are still waiting.

You're right. It's sad when Wikipedia is more accurate than the AFL's own website, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia ... me#Legends

Re: Hall of Fame Thread. Fighting for Collingwood recognition
An important figure at the club has contacted me in regards to this and I have been assured that a push has been made and that it has been known that Collingwood personalities have been skipped over. Also that rival clubs has also been a part of a push to get living players in now.
Wow.
Will we actually see all the worthy players from the 50's, 60's and 70's go in before 39 year olds that should be waiting a little bit longer?
