So he poured an energy drink into the drug-test beaker. I'm guessing it was yellow gatorade.

I suspect that if the real same, comes back clean, he'll probably get a reduced penalty - maybe 12 months rather than 4 years.

If the actual sample is positive to anything, then 4 years.

He should get a life ban

How did he manage that with someone watching him?

^ as much as we're elated that it's happened to one of our rivals (and not our own), he only deserves a life ban if the pure sample comes back positive. Otherwise he's clean and just handed himself a massive penalty (even if it's only 12 mths) needlessly.
From other media reports, it seems he may have taken an illicit substance after match day, and because the test wasn't on match day he would've walked away with just a slap on the wrist (i.e. no sanction, unlike Murray who was tested on match day with an illicit substance). So, he panicked and ends up worse off than if he'd just had the test come back with "illicit but not performance enhancing"

You don't mess with your urine sample unless you have something to hide.

True - but in his case what he had to hide may have earned him no sanction at all (i.e. if it was an illicit substance - not performance enhancing - and it wasn't detected on match day)

Correct. Really dumb thing to do, even if he had illicit drugs in his system it wasn't a match day test so he wouldn't even get a strike under the policy

If he'd been taking PED's at training, different situation.

I think there's a compelling argument that it was a PED he was trying to hide given the slap on the wrist he would have been given if was an illicit drug. Fact is that he blatantly deceived and therefore should be given the maximum penalty regardless of what the sample shows, otherwise you are incentivising this reprehensible behaviour

Former ASADA CEO Richard Ings was on SEN this morning explaining the charge, the urine sample collecting process, when we might know more detail, and the sanction that applies.

How bizarre. Not sure if he's seen Withnail & I too many times...

The weird thing about the energy drink allegation is that everyone's talking about how he could have thought he'd get away with it if an ASADA employee was standing there watching him. But what if that wasn't the case? Clearly, testing would immediately demonstrate that it wasn't urine, wouldn't it?

Herald-Sun specifically states a urine sample wasn't his. Plenty of examples of how to do a switcheroo from other sports. Even our own Dane Swan told a few tales about his 5am wake up calls, didn't he?

A radio caller said there are now question marks on the WC Eagles, they're all very big bodies and must have an amazing gym training regime (a bit like the Cats were, and then Essendon when Bomber Thompson moved there). Just as we copped our fair whack thanks to Thomas and Keefe and then Murray, it's fair enough. Wouldn't be the first time at WC! ;)

The person watching did exactly that...watch and noted it down. They don't say anything or interfere or remind players what to do.

So if they suspect a switcheroo is happening, they ignore it and just make note of exactly what happened and report it as soon as possible? I always thought they'd speak up and demand the right sample then and there, because who knows what PEDs the cheater is trying to hide.
