Well I've been thinking about this selection.

At the time I was puzzled that we'd taken a player that is going to miss the rest of the season. And right after the Hawks took Callow, the player that many of us wanted. It's really weird to take a player that is out for the year in the draft that is supposed to replace LTI's and unfilled spots from the previous rookie draft.

But from what I've heard, Collingwood knew Callow was going to be taken by the Hawks if he was still there at 17. That and we had decided on Johnson and planned on Begg from the start.

Collingwood got the two players they wanted.

Then I thought, we obviously must be planning on keeping him next year. So maybe we have actually found a steal here? He could be anything. Time will tell, but we'll have to be patient. Not a Collingwood supporters known trait.

I think most of us felt, not disappointed, but just annoyed that we took a guy that we cant see play until next year. Had we landed Johnson and Callow, I think they'd be a lot more excitement from last nights draft. That's not to say we shouldnt be excited about Begg. We just have to wait a bit longer.

My question is, was he expected to be drafted in the ND? And if so, where abouts?

Now that’s what you call a speculative selection.
Not Much Different to the Vic Kids that where Drafted in last years National Draft.

Was 2nd round Mid Season Draft Pick so Might as well take a Flyer on him and hope he does not have Shoulder Problems after this and can come a Good AFL Player for us
I should probably have said only 3 or 4 games over the full two years where Begg is concerned. That’s a very small sample.
I hear what you’re saying about the 2020 crop but most of them had their full year as bottom agers in U18s.
You know my thoughts, Dave. In theory, we have done the right thing but only time will tell if they scouted him correctly. If anyone knows how to play the big key forward, Travis did. His recommendation would count for plenty.

Presti, I think the key to their strategy is the knowledge that they werent going to the 2021 N D draft with many picks at all unless they heavily traded back in.
There aren’t many 18 year old KPFs ( outside top 10 ) who play seniors in their first year any way. He will come to the club fully recovered from the shoulder reco in his first pre season and begin his development like any 18 year old picked in the N D.
It’s hard to know where he would go in the N D because the sample size is so small ( 3 or NAB games in 2 years ) but you can guarantee Collingwood think he would be selected in the upcoming draft. If they didn’t, then they would have simply switched their attention to another tall who would have been selected.
And drafting kids with injuries happens every draft. Last year Hollands in the top 10 with a reco and Kemp the year before with a reco. Max King with a reco the year before that. All that suggests to me is that Collingwood really rate him. Time will tell.

I heard Callow compared to Checkers. Not sure we need two of that type running around in our dysfunctional forward line. Guess time will tell. What this really means is that Mason Cox’s probably out the door at seasons end.
The match day thread is for unfiltered BS knee jerk reactions. The time for level headed comment comes after.

My main memories of Walker is him hitting the ground when a knee caved in, something I have lots of experience with. :(

He could very well become our next FF or CHF, while helping Grundy out in the ruck. Given the glowing endorsement given by Travis Cloke, I reckon he could be a beauty. Also good to hear he hopes to play a game or two this year.

He speaks well for a young bloke.
Reckons he’s worked hard and really focussed on his rehab, which are positive signs you want to hear.
Interesting that Carlton and GWS had him on their radar.
I don’t think it will be from lack of trying with this young bloke and that’s all you can ask for.
