If that's the case then it's not really restricted is it? I mean if he can walk even if we match the offer then there is no restrictions. The whole thing is still in the too hard basket for me. Although I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

This is how the rule applies to Cloke:

A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is one of the 10 highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since reaching eight seasons of service.
The player is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.

If he wishes to change clubs, the player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.

His club has the right to match the presented offer.

If the club matches the offer, he may choose to remain with his original club, seek a trade or enter the Draft.

If the club does not or can not match the offer, the player can move to the new club of his choice.

His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period.

Say Travis presents the Carlton offer as his preferred deal.

If the Pies do not match it he goes to Carlscum.
If the Pies match the offer Travis can either stay a Pie or enter the draft under normal draft conditions.

So, in reality, at 8 years service, you are a free agent.

Restricted is a crock because even if you match the rival offer, the player will leave regardless.

Collingwood is reported to have already made its final offer of $800,000 pa over 4 yrs and a performance based contract in the 5th year. This has been rejected by Demir so unless he changes his mind Travis is gonski. I'm starting to feel sorry for the kid as I reckon he'd prefer to stay with us, but his old man has sabotaged that outcome.

Yes - but he could end up anywhere. If Melbourne or Port have the first pick and the available funds in their cap they can equal his asking price he goes to Melbourne. Unles you had a real issue with your existing club you would stay with your original club.

If Collingwood match Carlton's offer, but Cloke still wants to go, then Collingwood can seek to trade with Carlton.

David Cloke has suggested all along that the sticking point is the 5th year. If this is true, then surely the Pies would not let Cloke go for the sake of $300K in 2017's salary cap

Can't wait to see what picks the AFL determines we get for Cloke if he leaves.

Two first rounders ( no.3 and no.20 ) + a player ( someone of the potential of Josh Kennedy ) will do nicely thankyou very much.

That is what West Coast received for Judd from Carlton......so who is better Judd or Cloke? You could mount a case they are of similar value remembering quality AA premiership KPP's are rare.

yesterday, gary pert reiterated that travis wants to stay, collingwood wants him to stay. they'll work something out.

Doesn't work like that. Compensation Pick for losing a free agent will be one pick only, to be used immediately, and will be determined by the AFL. But most likely it will either be a first, 2nd or 3rd round pick to be used immediately after your pick in that round.

So we at most might receive Pick 18 for Travis, and that's assuming we don't sign a free agent to cover his loss (this will also effect the quality or likelihood of a pick)

Exactly, that's why a player like Goldsack hasn't been signed yet, that conspiracy theory looks better everyday

I'm not saying the club came out and said to Trav the only way we can match Carlton's offer would be to cut someone like your best friend Goldy..

But it's not so subtly implied by the numbers and the fact that Goldy is among a dwindling handful of players yet to be signed

He is actually one of those dispensible utility types you'd happily cash in for a quality key position

He was on the chopping block last week before the injury, he is exactly who you would nut for a power forward, it's just good list management

But if you want to discount it.. direct me to the article saying we've signed a borderline top 30 utility we should have wrapped up months ago

Of course Goldsack hasn't signed but the idea that clubs use blackmail like that to get its way is both ridiculous and very poor list management.
