I'm assuming you mean the Linux laptop from the US?

If I pay for air freight, I could have it here with 14 - 21 days; snail mail could see a wait of anywhere between 6 to 8 weeks.

However, it will have to be sent to a mate who lives in the US, who will then forward it on to me as System 76 http://system76.com/ only ships to the US and Canada. I'm still in discussions regarding compatibility between US and Australian standards, but I'm in no hurry at this stage.

The other option would be to go the Dell route, considering now that they can supply pc's installed with Linux, but I'd prefer a unit that is built specifically for a Linux O/S (Ubuntu 7.04).

For us that do not know the differences between Linux and Windows could you give a brief explanation?

I am still asked to fix M$ based pc's, but now only do it once. If I've already fixed it and the same problem has occurred (usually a virus or trojan), I tell them to deal with it themselves as they obviously didn't listen the last time. Once they start paying for their id 10 t errors that are caused by a PEBKAC fault, they soon take a more cautious approach to what they do.

Of the pc's that I've installed Linux onto, I've never been called back. Mostly everything works, and usually the first time, but if there is any doubt about the availability of drivers for, say, a printer, then we generally opt for a dual boot set-up.

I'd probably be lost on Linux, working on a computer I am fine, get me into trying to fix a computer or figure what is wrong with it I couldn't tell you anything..I have only heard a bit about Linux, never had an opportunity to use it.

With an O/S installed? And if so, what O/S would that be?

You would be able to go into just ANY pc shop and purchase a laptop built and configured to your own specs that runs flawlessly on Linux. A specialist pc shop, yes, but not just ANY pc shop.

As I said previously, Dell are now starting to release pc's with Linux pre-installed, but there is a lot of be desired about the after sales service. I fully understand the pitfalls of buying anything new from overseas, and I'm prepared to accept that risk if I do go the System 76 route.
