This idea is just so warped, its insane, no way can flags be added up from the old vfa and the League now, that dipstick farrker Fitzpatrick, a scum shit head, must be stopped from this ludicrous crap move.

The funniest thing about this is the headline: "History of the AFL could be turned on its head". Um, no, the history would remain exactly the same. The AFL would simply be arbritarily shifting the goalposts in an extremely mundane way. Carlton will be able to say they have 22 premierships ... except, they already can do that if they like. What will have changed, really? Will Bruce mention it during the commentary at some point?
Should they? Personally, I don't mind either way. In some ways I've always seen the current competition as a natural extension of the old pre-1897 VFA and perhaps even the looser competition that existed before that. In some respects, counting a flag won in 1877 makes about as much sense as counting one from 1905, given the way the game has changed since. Obviously teams like Hawthorn and Port Adelaide would be annoyed about their histories not 'officially' counting, but it's fair enough for them to miss out: the roots of the current AFL lie clearly in the VFL and original VFA; not the SANFL, WAFL or VFA post-1896.
Anyway, it's all just symbolism, and fairly abstract symbolism at that. But I don't think it would be such a bad thing.

Well with FitzPatrick in charge you'd reckon its a cert.
Let them get a bit of historical pleasure. God knows they are getting anything at present or in the foreseeable future.
Anyway it really should start at 1990 which makes us the inaugural Premiers.
All the other local comps should just keep their own histories.

Worse still we lose our boast that we are the only team to win 4 in row as Essendon did in 1891 - 1894 - Doh
Anyway I think it should be only back dated to official Premierships from Grand Finals - 1896 being the first and Essendon stipped of its 1897 & 1924 flags as they were round robin games!!!!
So My tally works out to Be Collingwood & Carlton 16 and Essendon 14
Get some of that Fitzy

My 1990 premiership T-shirt actually says something like: "Collingwood - First AFL premiers".Damien wrote:Well with FitzPatrick in charge you'd reckon its a cert.

if nothing else, what this mass-debate about where you start counting highlights just how meaningless it is even today to claim superiority over the number of flags you have won!!!!
If anything, the fact that Mike Fitzpatrick could in effect change history by simply saying it a different way, invalidates the existing status quo.
