Oh, no.

FIFA's greatest World Cup goal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wVho3I0NtU

From the Guardian's obituary:
Maradona scored what would turn out to be the match-winner, a goal acclaimed as one of the greatest ever scored, a matter of 10.8 seconds, 44 strides and 12 touches, during which he dribbled past five England players, upended the goalkeeper, Peter Shilton, with a feint, and slipped the ball into the net.

โ€œI felt like applauding,โ€ was the rueful comment of the England striker Gary Lineker. With Maradona as captain and scorer of five of their 14 goals, Argentina went on to become world champions, beating West Germany in the final.

Here's the great Jorge Valdano's very moving tribute:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... s-a-victim

I watched a Fox Sports tribute with Mark Bosnich and Robbie Slater. Robbie Slater still speaks with evident pride (and great sadness) about the kind words Diego had for him after the 1993 World Cup playoff match in Sydney and how Diego treated the Australian team when they were in Buenos Aires for the return leg.

I do not generally regret things - but I have over the years kicked myself many times for not taking the time to fly to Sydney to watch Diego play that game.

I really, really wish that Les Murray had still been with us to lead the tributes. His enthusiasm for Maradona's greatness led us all to see so much more of Diego here in Australia than we might otherwise have done in an age where coverage of the soccer was limited and we really only saw many of the greats once every 4 years at the World Cup. Somewhere, locked away, I have a series of Les' birthday tributes to Diego (3 minute highlights reels) taped from "The World Game" when it used be on SBS on Saturdays. I must get them out and watch. Here's a link to one of Les' special vignettes about DAM:

And here's Les' 1989 interview with the great man:
