Petracca Pie? Not anymore.

Post by Presti35 »

Collingwood will try and recruit Melbourne midfield bull and childhood Magpies fan Christian Petracca in the coming years, according to Magpies great Tony Shaw.

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/04/04/ ... urne-star/

“I think Christian Petracca is Collingwood’s target,” Shaw told 3AW on Sunday.
A trade would be costly. Very costly. He will be a free agent at the end of 2022. Can we wait that long?

Strong word about getting Zac Merrett this year as a free agent. Could we actually bring in these 2 quality players? Dont know if Tony Shaw is a reliable link to knowing whats going on behind the scenes.

SLOW DOWN PLEASE

2022 - Ben Cunnington, Nick Daicos

2023 - Christian Petracca

I don't know about Tony Shaw's view on who Collingwood should target, I dont think he understands the war tactics, ( Champion Player and Legend I admire ) but not a good coach and has said some strange things in the past. I do however like hearing about Mick McGuanes thoughts on Collingwood.

If it was up to Shaw we would have Ben Brown on a million dollars now.

Please tell me in what area is Zac Merret a standout player? Where would he make a significant difference to Collingwood?

Is it gaining un-contested possessions? Because we don't need that!

If what I've heard is correct and we are still semi 'juggling' the books, than we can't realistically go for a free agent at the end of this year unless they are dead cheap. IMO we don't need to this year anyway because as I've said before our list is shallow and we need a bit more time to be a 'genuine' premiership threat... and that's also why unless we got him for practically 'nothing' Cunnington should be 'off the table'. Personally, I'm not too much into Merret, if we're going to spend big bucks on on a free agent he better the best money can buy. Also as it's fairly likely we'll have a new coach next year and who's know's which way they'll aim (other than the obvious semi rebuild). Now back to the free agent - I'm 100% into Petracca - the boy is a gun and he's the perfect age, also he's a life long Pie's supporter, if the Demons falter over the next year or two - we may be a chance.

I agree SLOW DOWN PLEASE

and ps: Nick Daicos goes without saying.

Petracca would be a massive get, but it's hard to see how it happens, why would he leave Melbourne for Collingwood? Plus we've already got our marquee player for the next 7 years...

I did however, recommend that we target Taylor Walker last season.

Perhaps even held a poll, in which he recieved $&@* all votes from Nicksters.

Look at him now ha? Could you imagine Tex Walker and The Man from Texas together in our fwd line? We could very well be 3-0 right now. Infact, we would be!

If your wise it only takes 2 players to change your fortunes, but you have to absolutely get those right. Last season we could have taken a gamble on Walker and Cunnington ( Walker via free-agency, Cunnington via trade ). Both were realistic options. We could have axed Mayne or Greenwood hell even WHE.

It's the aggressive teams in the off-season that win flags these days mostly.

I assure you, if Walker and Cunnington knew that either was coming to Collingwood aswell they would play for unders. Because if you add 1 clearence specialist and ex-captain + 1 long-kicking power-forward and ex-captain then you INSTANTLY make Collingwood a 3 goal better team.

Cox and Mihocek are good B options
Walker is an A option

Pendles and Sidey are accumulators
Cunnington is a provider

If Collingwood do this strategically, they can de-list quite a bit more dead-wood end of season. Guys like:
Mayne
Greenwood
WHE
Elliot
Sier
Prob looking at around close to 2 million in salary just there

We should try intergrate some youngblood this season like:
Macrae
McCreery
McInnes
Henry
Next season obviously N.Daicos

After spreading some the money (2million) around and topping up Moore and Degoey, we could have around 1.2million remaining.

Both Walker and Cunnington will be free-agents and can be lured with the Intent of a Premiership and finishing their respective careers at a Big Team. Both Players will be 31 next season ( same age as Sidebottom ). Both players can be acquired for within the salary each over 3 seasons. Walker 600-700k Cunnington 500-600k.

With our defense in good shape and another Daicos on the way, I believe Walker and Cunnington can help deliver us a flag

FF MasonCox TaylerWalker JDG
HF N.Daicos Mihocek J. Daicos
C Macrae Pendlebury Sidebottom
HB Crisp Moore Quaynor
FB Maynard Roughead Howe
C Grundy Cunnington Adams

Int : McInnes Noble Madgen McCreery

I can't see merrett leaving essendon. They have recruited far better than us in the talls department and may leapfrog us.

I actually hope we look long term learning from our shocking mismanagement of the salary cap and not bringing in more grundy like contracts which will squeeze out more talent.

Develop from within and top up with smart trades. We won't be premiership material ror a good 5 years unfortunately.

But how did you do that? You only joined Nicks in March this year.

Don't tell me you were on here under a different name how surprising!

I'd rather sit back and let Sier prosper, Cunnington is good but realistically we're getting a couple years out of him and going off recent events 500k a year would be likely from a Collingwood pov. Merrett's gone backwards tbh, good player but not the game changer we need. Pertraccas a great call forward but we still long for something in the forwardline. Realistically Tex ain't leaving the Crows, he's stayed there for so long and is needed to bring confidence to their young side.

We should be saving our money for a genuine KPF instead of another run-of-the-mill midfielder.

I honestly couldn’t care less who Petracca barracked for as a kid. It should never be a reason for recruiting someone.

In order of what we require:

1. FF (i.e One of the King Brothers)
2. CHF (i.e Darling, Oskar Allan)
3. Crumbing forward (i.e Cameron, Betts)
4. Small Forward (i.e Didak, Medhurst)
5. Strong bodied midfielder (i.e Petracca, Cripps)

We looked at Merrett last year but didn’t have the mula or draft picks to go any further than wishful thinking. Mcrae who we drafted will be a better player but a couple years off in development.

My opinion is I'd like him, he is a gun and he's a different kind of beast to say a pure midfielder - he's an actual match winner because he kicks goals.

The barracking for the Pies is not why we'd consider him but it 100% doesn't hurt.

He can't be our top priority, because we need to develop and recruit our own players as a top priority but of most free agents available - he's the one I'd look at.. unless a gun KPF became available (I can't think of any..?) the issue is what will he cost us? And is he worth it in considerations to our needs. Just remember Pendles can't play forever... and realistically our window won't open again for at least 2 years.
