Jezza, question: For EPL (and all the other competitions), what are the rules re. naming teams before games? I mean, do they have to nominate a restricted group that the subs are drawn from in the game? If so, what size?

This might answer your question, K.
From the 2022/23 season, Premier League teams will be permitted to make up to five substitutions in a single game.

The rules around the new allowance are subject to certain restrictions along the same lines as they initially were in 2019/20.

Managers can now name a maximum of nine substitutes on their matchday team sheet, including goalkeepers, with in-game changes only allowed at three intervals.

A total of five substitutions can be made in regular time (90 minutes plus added time) but each manager is only permitted three opportunities to make those changes, including halftime and hydration breaks.

Thanks, Jezza. That has me a little  ...

I should check the rules for Champions League, etc. Looks like UEFA allowed 5 substitutions or 6 during the pandemic, but need to dig further...

UEFA Champions League Technical Report: The impact of substitutes

Wednesday, August 24, 2022

'The UEFA Technical Observers' review of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League season discusses how changes effected games and weigh up the merits and drawbacks of using five substitutes.'

https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleagu ... of-substi/

"This was the second full season in which teams could make five substitutions, rather than three, and runners-up Liverpool were among those with the most replacements, their average of 4.8 per match surpassed only by Inter, Porto and Sporting CP.

Of Liverpool's 60 changes overall, 27 were midfielders coming on to re-energise their efforts centrally."

'England midfielder Dele Alli spent six weeks in rehab in the United States in a bid to deal with mental-health problems stemming from a traumatic childhood and after getting addicted to sleeping pills.
...

Alli said he was molested at the age of six by a friend of his biological mother, was then “sent to Africa to learn discipline,” and was dealing drugs at eight. He was adopted at the age of 12.

He thrived at Tottenham under Pochettino from 2015-19, saying the Argentine coach “cared about me as a person before the football,” but never had as good a relationship with other managers.

Alli said at the age of 24, when Jose Mourinho was Tottenham’s manager, he returned to a “bad place.”
...

Harry Kane, the England captain and a former teammate of Alli’s at Tottenham, tweeted that he was proud of Alli “for speaking out and sharing his experience to try and help others” while Everton said the club “respects and applauds Dele’s bravery to speak about the difficulties he has faced, as well as seek the help required”.'

I'll bring this comment over here and try to post more on Spurs. Rapt that the first Aussie EPL manager happens to have come to the team I've adopted.
pietillidie wrote:Very pleased to welcome big Ange to Spurs. That was a much better draw against Brentford than many will realise given the number of debutants, the pre-match delay, Romero's concussion subbing, a soft penalty, and more.

Looking forward to seeing him bring an entirely different style and team together, with optimistic signs early. He's certainly handled it well so far, and has the toughness needed for what is a brutal league and media environment.

The test will be dealing with the counter attack and through balls given his midfield stacking and high line, and of course replacing Kane's goals, but he won't need anyone to tell him that.
In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.
