From the AFL web site, this stunningly sh.tty piece of news

Read and Weep

MELBOURNE, April 26 AAP - Collingwood recruit Chad Rintoul will be out until mid-season after breaking his leg in yesterday's Anzac Day clash with Essendon.Originally claimed by the club to be a calf injury, the Magpies admitted today he had broken the fibula bone.He will be out for four to six weeks - a blow for the Magpies as he had displayed some good form since crossing from West Coast in the off-season.With their next game not until May 6 against Carlton, the 'Woods will expect to regain ruckman Steven McKee from a shoulder injury.Damien Adkins could be back after a long-term groin injury, while hamstring victims Scott Burns and Andrew Ukovic will face fitness tests.

That is BAD news. I just posted the exact same topic under the team forum. He will be missed but I believe we can cope without him. McKee should be back and Adkins should be back soon also.

Four to six weeks for a broken leg!!!

I can remember when a broken leg meant the end of your season. Has sports medicine really progressed that much? It's hard to believe.

We will definitely miss Rintoul. He's been one of our very best so far this year. But, I guess it just means someone else gets a chance.

How awesome will Collingwood be if we ever get a full strength side on the field!!!

The fibula is the smaller lower leg bone and doesn't take direct weight. The break can be a crack, simple fracture or compound, so that decides how long it takes. Just for interest...out champ Adkins...Osteitis Pubis: (Groin Injury): An inflammation of the pubic bone of the pelvis where the adductor (inner thigh muscle) attaches...an overuse injury due to repetitive stress. Scans are picking things up better today, so you can get onto it quicker and sort it out before too much damage gets done and things get chronic.

It happened right in front of me actually, Chad lined up Mercuri on the Southern Stand wing but unfortunately he dropped down and Rintoul went flying over the top of him and may have even hit Licuria on the way through. He jumped up and limped off the ground, which is an incredible effort for a guy who has just broken his leg.

His courage and toughness will be missed.
