That was a bit off, yes.

^ I know you don’t, but you seemed to be suggesting that violence at the Milo thing was because some white supremacists (non-violently) attended it, whereas Ford’s gatherings go unmolested because the attendees are (by some arbitrary standard) less bad.
The idea that good-thinking people are somehow licensed to suppress bad-thinking people is a dangerous alibi. While both political sides use it, it seems far more mainstream on the ordinary Left than it is on the ordinary right. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

Anyway, Jezza, you posted this stuff in disapproval, calling her vile and bemoaning the way she treats her opponents. Where’s your condemnation of Yiannopoulos for saying the same and worse? |
I'm happy to condemn it right now. Yiannopoulos went too far on what he said about Ford and any other opponents that have faced his wrath in the past. I have no regard or sympathy for Ford as I mentioned earlier, but I don't think playing fire with fire is the answer, and he should be above that.
I like listening to his proper arguments (not all which I agree with by the way), but I think his insults toward opponents cheapens his act and undoes much of the interesting debate he generates. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

The slightly wry irony of the far-right's position on anyone they disagree with is that their response to anything that challenges their world-view is precisely the same as the response of the ultra-conservative foreigners they think they hate. If Jezza's bigot mate attending this event the other evening were Malaysian, he'd be an ultra-conservative member of PAS. The sad thing (for the rest of us) is that the so-called alt-right actually is what it pretends to rail against. |
Neither my mate and myself are alt-right or even far-right for that matter and to characterise him as a bigot is insulting.
He's a Chinese guy who's family fled communist China in the 1980s and he's the furthest thing from a racist or bigot. Both of us have a mix of libertarian and moderate conservative views, but we like listening to all sorts of people to challenge us, whether we agree with them entirely or not.
We've seen the likes of Maajid Nawaz and Brendan O'Neill live here in Melbourne and loved hearing what they had to say.
Nawaz was fascinating to listen to with his extremist past and how he was radicalised as a teenager and joined a prescribed terrorist organisation and then later went through the de-radicalisation process and how his organisation, Qullium, is trying to combat and counter Islamist extremism through his organisation. He's a man I respect greatly for being so lucid and concise on the topic.
In relation to O'Neill. O'Neill is actually a Marxist at heart, but he has deep concerns about authoritarianism and worries about the direction of politics in the western world with the increasing authoritarianism creeping in from both the left and far-right. Once again, I don't agree with his Marxist world view, but I found his talk fascinating as a listener.
Lastly, the alt-right are actual white supremacists and authoritarians and hold repulsive views, albeit they're not large thankfully. If the left wants to target and stop the growth of the alt-right, they're targeting the wrong people. They should be going after the likes of Richard Spencer and Jared Taylor who actually espouse the proper alt-right position and hold genuinely scary views of the world. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

^ in the Age today, Victoria Police say they plan to bill the organizers of the event $50k for their services. Very strange. Not like it will encourage oppositional troublemakers, after all.... _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

That is strange, yes. Is the fact of being protested (and thus requiring police presence) a misdemeanour in its own right? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I think asking him in the first place was completely wrong-headed. If an event is permissible but may require some policing because of potential protests, I don't consider it to be appropriate to bill those responsible for the event. It isn't the same as, say, holding a football match with 100,000 people in attendance or a large concert - in such cases, the police are typically inside and around the event providing crowd-management services. It sets a worrying trend if police are going to charge for policing "controversial" events. I don't think the bloke should have been given a visa but, since he was, billing him for policing services struck me as quite inappropriate. |

I just read this. The mask really slipped there, didn't it ? It's not a contest of ideas with people like Rundle, it's something like a personal hatred. In some liberals - often the more intellectual sort - the more humanist and progressive the skin, the deeper the urge to dehumanise and vilify. This is often applied most to those who actually love someone they disagree with. Love for the hate object is a worse sin than being the hate object itself, it seems. It's why the families had to go to the gulags as well as the perps, I think. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |
