AUSTRALIA recorded one of their biggest one-day cricket wins by thrashing Zimbabwe by 148 runs in today's tri-series clash at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

Adam Gilchrist's blazing 172 took Australia to 7-344 off their 50 overs.

Faced with a required run-rate of seven from the outset, Zimbabwe hardly bothered about a decent attempt on the target.

Zimbabwe finished on 6-196, with captain Heath Streak (64 not out) and Tatenda Taibu (44) adding 102 before the wicketkeeper holed out in the last over.

Australia's total was the highest scored in Australia, their fourth-highest overall, and the win their 10th-greatest when batting first.

Zimbabwe's defeat was their equal third-heaviest when chasing.

Gilchrist fell agonisingly short of his country's highest individual score and was bowled by Sean Ervine attempting to overtake the 173 his former opening partner Mark Waugh made against the West Indies at the MCG in 2000-01.

But it's doubtful an Australian batsman has ever been so destructive, as Gilchrist faced just 126 balls with three sixes and 13 fours.

He was dropped three times – on 36, 71 and 159 – but his clean hitting was a feature and after he brought up his hundred, he smashed a third 50 from 21 balls.

He slogged successive sixes off part-timer Stuart Matsikenyeri, whose one over cost 17 runs.

To complete an emphatic man of the match performance, Gilchrist took three catches behind the stumps.

Gilchrist put on 140 with Matthew Hayden (63) and 106 with captain Ricky Ponting (37), while Damien Martyn found form after a lean trot with an unbeaten 47.

After successive batting struggles in their opening two losses, Zimbabwe were never going to threaten Australia's total.

When Brett Lee and Brad Williams took a wicket each inside the first eight overs, the mercy rule should have been employed.

Lee took 1-29 from 10 overs in his comeback match.

Streak, who earlier toiled hard for 3-50 with the ball, rescued his side with the bat for the third straight match after scores of 46 and 59 not out.

Grant Flower made 40 before he was run out after slipping mid-pitch.

If poor fielding and a thrashing weren't big enough blows for Zimbabwe, the side was also fined by match referee Clive Lloyd for a slow over rate.

As captain, Streak was fined 20 per cent of his match fee because his side was two overs slow, while his teammates were fined 10 per cent.

Australia, with three straight wins and two bonus points from wins over Zimbabwe, plays India in Brisbane on Sunday.
