Scud fires in adidas first round

January 13, 2004 - Fox

MARK Philippoussis set up an explosive showdown with Greg Rusedski with a fighting first-round win at the adidas International in Sydney.

Philippoussis overcome windy conditions and an in-form qualifier to beat the Spaniard 6-4 5-7 6-2 on centre court at Olympic Park.

The Australian No.1 trailed by a break of serve in the deciding set before reeling off six straight games to take the match.

Philippoussis will meet fellow big server Rusedski tomorrow for a place in the quarter-finals.

Rusedski yesterday put aside his drugs controversy to advance with a 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-5) victory over Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela.

Earlier today, Philippoussis's Davis Cup teammate Wayne Arthurs lost his first-round match 6-4 6-4 to Dutch eighth seed Martin Verkerk and South African veteran Wayne Ferreira upset American star James Blake 6-2 6-4.

Hewitt to meet Moya in final - Fox Sports

TWO-TIME champion Lleyton Hewitt will renew his rivalry with Spanish Davis Cup foe Carlos Moya after the two advanced to the final of the adidas International today.

Hewitt led French Open runner-up Martin Verkerk 6-2 when the Dutchman retired ill before the second set of their rain-marred semi-final at Olympic Park. The seventh-seeded Hewitt led 4-2 and 30-15 before rain forced the pair off court for about two hours.

The Australian No.2, looking to add a third Sydney title to the ones he won in 2000-01, will meet Moya tomorrow after the third seed outclassed South African Wayne Ferreira 6-2 6-1 in their semi-final.

Hewitt has played Moya eight times, with the Spaniard leading the former world No.1 with five wins.

Hewitt takes title

Fox

LLEYTON Hewitt claimed his third adidas International title in Sydney when injured Spaniard Carlos Moya retired from today's final at Olympic Park.

Hewitt was leading 4-3 and 40-15 when Moya retired after rolling his ankle in the previous game.

The third seed took a medical time-out to have his ankle strapped but could only manage a further four points before calling it a day.

Hewitt's success followed his back-to-back titles in 2000-01 and extended his winning sequence to 18 matches on the Homebush Bay centre court.
