Great work Hoggy with the stats and it shows a slight decrease although i thought it may have been a bit more dramatic.

Dyso,

Thank you so much for yr kind observation. In turn may I politely enquire as to how yr pursuit of a certain lady may be progressing......

Dave, seeing as you may be referring to me re yr submission re his technique, may I repeat for the 3rd time that I am no slave to textbook purity. However can you dispute the point that Bevan's inadequate technique esp against the short ball cost him his Test career.

What I do contend is that his methods are becoming Less effective in recent times. He is becoming a much slower starter and his timing and subsequent ball striking much less proficient. BTW, did not label him selfish, so fire elsewhere on that score.

Re the Stackpole article. Well Stacky may have had a reasonably distinguished playing career but pity it can't be said about his career as a media pundit. Enough said.

I've said enough on this topic and probably earned more than sufficient barbs so I'll deal myself out now. He is undoubtedly a player who has and will always play to mixed reviews as evidenced by this debate. Each to their own.

I do tend to agree about Stacky. A lovely bloke, an attacking opening batsman and an excellent slipper but not the most astute cricket writer/commentator.

However, I did find it interesting that anyone is suggesting a return to Test cricket - albeit specifically for the Indian tour because of his ability to play spinners - for a player who must have given up that hope years ago.

A good point LD re not being able to make runs from the Pavillion. Bichel and Harvey were not able to make any the other game because Bevan was soaking up deliveries and didnt even make an attempt to lift the tempo when he still had a few hitters left in the pavillion.

However as i mentioned Bevan is lucky that he has a great bowling attack which ensures most of his run chases have been very small totals and he can afford to be slow.

And did they win? Find an innings where Bevans' soaking up the deliveries cost Oz the match...you cant? That's because it's called pacing an innings and playing the percentages. You'd find Bichel and Harvey are no more than handy bats...will make a score one innings in 10, if that. They are much better at 'slogging' with 4-5 overs to go, the position Bevan puts them in by 'soaking' up the strike. The 'hitters' in the pavilion are bowlers with a reasonable eye, not Ricky Ponting clones. They generally can slog 20 odd off 10 to 15 balls MAXIMUM, not bat for 20 overs to make 60 odd.

And you think Bevan is too stupid to know what sort of a bowling attack his side has? If he had the Bangladesh boys as his frontline stuff, he'd probably be a little more adventurous.

You can go in at 5 or 6 for 100 chasing 220 with 25 overs to go, and...
(a) try to bash your way home inside 35-40 overs...will work maybe one in 20 innings...
or
(b) get yourself to the point where you may need no more than 8 an over for the last 4 or 5....pressure does strange things to a bowling attack....bit like a 72 hole golf tournament..be there or thereabouts with 9 holes to play sunday arvo.

He may be 'slow', but does he get there in the end? You don't win extra prizes for doing it in 40 overs, so why not use the 50? Find an innings where he has misjudged the 'pace'....if you can, there'd be 10 he'd got it spot on..not a bad ratio.

You can say Bevan bats like a constipated crab with a fly swatter, is 'boring' in the sense that he's no Adam Gilchrist, but selfish he aint. Does the stuff to get the team home, when required, or set a target. He only ever bats for any length of time when the 'dashers' have failed....he is, in essence, Oz Plan B...get to the best score you can after the 'bats' have failed.

I'll leave you with the thoughts of Harry Callaghan, aka Clint Eastwood, first Dirty Harry film to ponder...

Good observations London Dave.

Can we call a halt to the Bevan bashing at least until the day comes when his batting does in fact actually cost us a game?

But don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

'Nuff said.

Weel, weel, weel (sounding like Tony Greig) it appears Mr.Bevan ALMOST got NSW home today. But the "freak" rolled him. Heh heh.

Jeez, there'd be a bit of argie bargie for the dressing room mirror with both Bevan and Harvey in the same team.

I'll keep it topical, what about that old Michael Jackson song "The man in the mirror", could be their theme song.

CW,
I hope you aren't suggesting that our elite cricketers are prone to gazing upon their own reflections. What's the term - narcississm?

Who's a pretty boy then, eh?

Punko, please resubmit your 'Bevan v. Tendulkar' stats thingy here.

I'm not sure if I cut and paste that the download bit will still work.

These poste were submitted before the above one from punkologist. I've just moved them here from the Haddin thread.

punkologist:

hey im new to this debate and not sure of whats been said so far but ill put my 2 cents in.

I think Bevan is useless. I saw him at the one dayer in melb earlier this month, how many balls did he face?

He had a few good games a few years ago against a poor west indies.
He scores too slow and the first time he takes a risk he throws away his wicket.
