Maxy sends selectors a double reminder.
Glenn Maxwell wants his Test spot back and can hardly have given National selectors a better reminder than a double century, in today's Shield match, against NSW.
He shared a 145 run second wicket p'ship with Travis Dean (36) and a 148 run stand with Aaron Finch (76).
At stumps, Vic. 3/365.

Maxy puts Bushies in strong position.
Glenn Maxwell's excellent 278 allowed Victoria to declare on 9/562, against NSW. Cam White (66), Aaron Finch (76) and Chris Tremain (45*) also contributed.

Well, I guess Timmy Paine boosts GM's chances of a national call-up. |

With Smith's latest comments, following his past actions, one's suspicions grow that he really doesn't like Maxwell. I find this a bit disturbing. Apart from the issue of fairness for the individual concerned, the team is simply not strong enough to allow people to engage in politics and personal grievances. This brings back bad memories from his immediate predecessor's captaincy.
Update:
I see Steve Waugh also found Smith's comments inappropriate.

I think it's more a case of them not liking his personality.
The test of the man-management skills of a coach or captain is how he deals with people who are not his type, who maybe are deemed 'difficult'. If the captain or coach doesn't have such skills, ultimately it's not just the player who suffers but the team and the team's long-suffering supporters.
Update:
I see that Baz McCullum has rather diplomatically hinted that Smith's comments weren't helpful.
"... you lose a little bit of the understanding that other guys maybe can't do or don't do things quite the same as what you do..."
(See also Steve Waugh's comments referred to above.) |
